How much is Bydureon with insurance?

If you do have insurance, the terms of your insurance plan will determine how much you will need to pay for Bydureon with insurance. To find out what you may need to pay, your insurance provider or pharmacist will be able to calculate your copay with your current insurance.

How much does Bydureon cost without insurance?

Bydureon prices without insurance will vary by retailer. As a guide, one Bydureon kit that contains four, 2 mg Bydureon BCise injectable pens will cost around $600.

What is Bydureon?

Bydureon is a prescription medication given to adults with type 2 diabetes. It is a non-insulin medication that can help to lower blood glucose levels when used alongside exercise and dietary changes. You take Bydureon by injecting it under your skin (subcutaneous injection) using a pre-filled, self-injecting pen, usually once per day.

Bydureon encourages your pancreas to produce more insulin and reduces how much glucose your liver secretes into your blood. It does this whilst you’re digesting food, helping to stop your blood glucose from rising too high. Bydureon becomes less active when you stop digesting and your blood glucose falls, helping to stop your blood sugar falling too low (hypoglycemia).

Bydureon active ingredients

The active ingredient in Bydureon is called exenatide. It’s a drug called an incretin mimetic because it mimics a type of digestive hormone, called incretins, that your body produces when you digest food.

Exenatide works by having the same effects on your body as incretin digestive hormones. When you’re digesting food and glucose is released into your blood, exenatide encourages:

  1. Your pancreas to produce more insulin
  2. Your pancreas to produce less of a hormone called glucagon that makes you liver release stored glucose into your blood
  3. Food to move slower through your digestive system, causing glucose to be released from your food slowly.

All of these effects can cause your blood glucose levels to fall. Exenatide stops being as active when you’re not digesting food, causing these effects to reduce, which can stop your blood glucose levels from falling too low.

There’s also evidence that exenatide can reduce your appetite, helping you lose weight gradually as you use it, and that it can lower your cholesterol levels over time too. Both of these effects can also help treat your type 2 diabetes.

Bydureon side effects & Bydureon drug interactions

The most common side effects caused by Bydureon include:

  • Nausea (feeling sick) – this usually reduces over time however as your body gets used to Bydureon
  • A bump (nodule) forming in the skin at the site of injection

Occasionally, Bydureon can cause more serious side effects including:

  • Thyroid tumors, including cancerous tumors
  • Inflammation of your pancreas (pancreatitis)
  • Very low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)
  • Kidney problems, including kidney failure
  • Severe stomach problems
  • Low blood platelet counts that can interfere with blood clotting (drug-induced thrombocytopenia)
  • Severe allergic reactions to the medication that can cause anaphylaxis
  • Serious reactions at the site of injection, including swelling, blisters, open wounds, and severe pain
  • Gallbladder problems

Bydureon can interact with other medications such as:

  • Any other diabetes medications, particularly other medicines that contain exenatide, like Byetta
  • Any medications containing liraglutide or another glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonist (GLP-1 receptor agonist)

This can change how Bydureon and the other medications work and can make some side effects more likely.
