What is Farxiga?
Farxiga is a medication used to lower blood sugar levels in people who have type 2 diabetes. It is also used in certain people to lower the risk of hospitalization for heart failure. Farxiga is taken as a pill, usually once a day.
Patients with diabetes struggle to maintain a normal blood sugar level. When they digest food, sugar is then released into the blood and their bodies don’t absorb it as well as they should. This can lead to high levels of blood sugar, which can cause a range of health problems over time.
Farxiga is used alongside exercise and changes in diet to manage blood sugar. It helps to remove excess blood sugar through urine. The medication can be used in combination with some other diabetes medications too, including insulin, metformin, or a sulfonylurea.

Farxiga active ingredients
The active ingredient in Farxiga is called dapagliflozin. When absorbed into your bloodstream, dapagliflozin slows down the rate at which your kidneys absorb sugar from your blood. This causes your kidneys to release sugar into your urine. Your blood sugar levels then fall as you urinate.
Farxiga side effects & drug interactions
Like all medications, Farxiga can have side effects, although not everyone will get them, or experience the same ones. Common Farxiga side effects include dehydration, changes in urination, dizziness, back pain, and a yeast infection of the vagina or penis. More serious, but rarer, side effects can include low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), more serious urinary tract infections, inflammation of the pancreas, diabetic ketoacidosis, and a rare bacterial infection that damages the tissue under the skin in the area between the anus and genitals (necrotizing fasciitis).
These aren’t all side effects Farxiga can cause. You can find more details in the patient leaflet that comes with your medication. If you have any concerns about Farxiga side effects, talk to your physician or a pharmacist.
Farxiga can interact with other medications, changing how it and other medications work. If this happens, side effects may be more likely. Tell your prescribing physician about all drugs you’re taking, including vitamins and dietary supplements. In particular, let them know if you’re taking a diuretic or any other medications for diabetes like insulin or sulfonylureas.
Farxiga warnings & precautions
Don’t take Farxiga if you:
- Are allergic to the active ingredient dapagliflozin
- Are allergic to any of the other ingredients found in Farxiga (listed in the leaflet which comes with the medication)
- Have diabetic ketoacidosis or a history of diabetic ketoacidosis
- Have severe kidney issues or are on dialysis
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Are under 18 years of age
Farxiga is not for the treatment of type 1 diabetes.
Talk to your physician before taking Farxiga if you have:
- Type 1 diabetes
- Kidney and liver problems
- Heart disease
- An intolerance to any sugars
- Are over 65 years of age
- Are taking medication to lower your blood pressure or have a history of low blood pressure
- Often get urinary tract infections

**If you do not receive medications because you were determined to be ineligible for the prescription assistance by the applicable pharmaceutical companies and you have a letter of denial, we will refund any fees you paid toward medications for which you did not qualify to receive prescription assistance (“Refund”).
To receive a refund, you must send the letter of denial to us by fax to 888-517-7444, or by e-mail to [email protected] within 30 days of your receipt of such letter. The Refund is your sole and exclusive remedy for any fees you may wish to dispute.
