What is Liptruzet?

Liptruzet is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Merck. Liptruzet contains ezetimibe, a cholesterol absorption inhibitor, and atorvastatin, an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (statin). It is used in combination with diet to:

  • Reduce total cholesterol, LDL-C (low-density lipoprotein cholesterol), Apo B, triglycerides, and non-HDL-C (high-density lipoprotein cholesterol), and increase HDL-C in patients with primary hyperlipidemia or mixed hyperlipidemia
  • Reduce total cholesterol and LDL-C in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH), in combination with other lipid-lowering treatments

What doses of Liptruzet are available?

Liptruzet is available in tablet form, in the following doses: (ezetimibe mg/atorvastatin mg): 10/10, 10/20, 10/40, and 10/80.

The recommended starting dose is 10/10 mg/day or 10/20 mg/day. For patients requiring a greater than 50% reduction in LDL-C the recommended starting dose is 10/40 mg/day.

Liptruzet contains ezetimibe and atorvastatin as active ingredients.

Liptruzet side effects

The most common side effects of Liptruzet in clinical trials include:

  • Increased ALT
  • Increased AST
  • Musculoskeletal pain

In rare instances, Liptruzet can cause more serious adverse effects. These can include:

  • Skeletal muscle effects such as myopathy and rhabdomyolysis
  • Liver enzyme abnormalities

Liptruzet drug interactions

Liptruzet can interact with other medications. These include:

  • Cyclosporine
  • HIV protease inhibitors – nelfinavir, tipranavir plus ritonavir, saquinavir plus ritonavir, darunavir plus ritonavir, fosamprenavir, fosamprenavir plus ritonavir
  • Hepatitis C protease inhibitor telaprevir
  • Gemfibrozil
  • Clarithromycin
  • Itraconazole
  • Other lipid-lowering medications
  • Fenofibrate
  • Cholestyramine
  • Digoxin
  • Oral contraceptives
  • Grapefruit or grapefruit juice

This list is not exhaustive and other prescription drugs may interact with Liptruzet. Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

Liptruzet contraindications

You should not use Liptruzet if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredients ezetimibe or atorvastatin
  • Are allergic to any of the other ingredients in Liptruzet
  • Have active liver disease or unexplained increase of hepatic transaminase
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed

Talk to your doctor before using Liptruzet if you:

  • Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Liptruzet
  • Have liver problems – atorvastatin levels are significantly higher in patients with chronic alcoholic liver disease

Liptruzet is the trademark brand name for ezetimibe/atorvastatin manufactured by Merck. A generic version of ezetimibe/atorvastatin is available. Generic drugs are generally cheaper than brand-name drugs, but you can still find Liptruzet savings through NiceRx.
