What is Orthovisc?

Orthovisc (hyaluronan) is a prescription medication used to treat knee pain in patients with osteoarthritis (joint swelling). It is normally used when patients have tried other treatments that haven’t worked. Other treatments include other medications, exercise, or physical therapy.

Hyaluronan is similar to the fluid that naturally surrounds joints in your body. It works as a lubricant and a shock absorber in and around your joint, allowing the knee to move more smoothly and reduce any pain you may feel.

Orthovisc is given to you as an injection directly into the knee joint either by your doctor or other healthcare professional. If more than one injection is needed it will normally be given to you at least 1 week after your first injection.

Orthovisc active ingredients

Orthovisc contains the active ingredient hyaluronan. It is believed that hyaluronan reduces the symptoms of arthritis in the knee in 3 ways;

  1. Lubrication and shock absorption of the knee joint, which reduces friction
  2. Reducing swelling (anti-inflammatory)
  3. Pain relief by forming a boundary around nerve endings in the knee blocking signals from the brain and other pain-inducing cells in the knee

Orthovisc side effects

The most common side effects caused by Orthovisc include

  • Joint pain, stiffness, swelling, numbness, itching, or tingling
  • Pain, redness, or mild discomfort where the medicine was injected
  • Headache or dizziness
  • Back pain

In rare instances, Orthovisc can cause more serious side effects. These can include

  • Bleeding
  • Increased pain in the knee pain
  • Infection (warmth, swelling, redness) around your knee.

Serious allergic reactions to this drug are rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms such as rash, swelling (especially of the face, tongue, or throat), trouble breathing, or dizziness.

Your doctor will assess the benefits of taking Orthovisc against your risk of side effects.

Orthovisc drug interactions

Orthovisc can interact with other medications applied to the skin. These include:

  • Benzalkonium chloride
  • Cetylpyridinium
