What is Sustol?

Sustol (granisetron extended-release injection) is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Heron Therapeutics, Inc. Sustol is a serotonin-3 (5-HT3) receptor antagonist indicated in combination with other antiemetics in adults for the prevention of acute and delayed chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting associated with initial and repeat courses of moderately emetogenic chemotherapy (MEC) such as cisplatin, or anthracycline and cyclophosphamide (AC) combination chemotherapy regimens.

What doses of Sustol are available?

Sustol is available as an extended-release Injection, in the following doses: 10 mg/0.4 mL in a single-dose, pre-filled syringe.

The recommended dosage in adults is 10 mg as a single subcutaneous injection at least 30 minutes before the start of emetogenic chemotherapy on Day 1. Do not administer more frequently than once every 7 days. Use for more than 6 months is not recommended. In patients with moderate renal impairment administer not more frequently than once every 14 days. Sustol is not recommended in patients with severe renal impairment.

Sustol side effects

The most common side effects of Sustol in clinical trials include:

  • Constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain, gastroesophageal reflux
  • Tiredness
  • Headache
  • Insomnia
  • Dizziness
  • Asthenia

In rare instances, Sustol can cause more serious adverse effects. These can include:

  • Injection site reactions – infection, bleeding, pain, nodules, swelling, and induration. In patients receiving antiplatelet agents or anticoagulants, consider the increased risk of bruising or severe hematoma prior to treatment
  • Gastrointestinal disorders – seek immediate medical care if signs and symptoms of ileus occur
  • Hypersensitivity reactions
  • Serotonin syndrome – with 5-HT receptor antagonists alone but particularly with concomitant use of serotonergic drugs

Sustol drug interactions

Sustol can interact with other medications. These include:

  • 5-HT3 receptor antagonists and other serotonergic drugs, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs)

This list is not exhaustive and other prescription drugs may interact with Sustol. Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

Sustol contraindications

You should not use Sustol if you:

  • Have a known hypersensitivity to granisetron or to any of the other 5-HT3 receptor antagonists
  • Have had an allergic reaction to any of the other ingredients in Sustol
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant

Talk to your doctor about your medical condition before using Sustol if you:

  • Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Sustol
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed

Sustol generic

Sustol is the trademark brand name for granisetron manufactured by Heron Therapeutics, Inc. A generic version of granisetron is not available. Generic drugs are generally cheaper than brand-name drugs, but you can still find Sustol savings through NiceRx.
