What is Absorica LD?

Absorica LD is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, Inc. Absorica LD is a retinoid indicated for the treatment of severe recalcitrant nodular acne in patients 12 years of age and older.

Absorica must not be used by female patients who are or may become pregnant. There is a very high risk that severe birth defects will result if pregnancy occurs while taking Absorica in any amount, even for short periods of time. Any fetus exposed during pregnancy can potentially be affected. There are no accurate means of determining whether an exposed fetus has been affected. Absorica is available only through a restricted program called the iPLEDGE program. Prescribers, patients, pharmacies, and distributors must enroll in the program.

What doses of Absorica LD are available?

Absorica LD is available in a capsule formulation, in the following doses: 10 mg, 20 mg, 30 mg, and 40 mg.

The recommended dose of 0.5 to 1 mg/kg/day is given in two divided doses without regard to meals for 15 to 20 weeks. Once-daily dosing is not recommended. Perform pregnancy tests prior to prescribing, each month during therapy, end of therapy, and one month after discontinuation. Perform fasting lipid profile and liver function tests before prescribing. Absorica is not substitutable with other forms of isotretinoin.

Absorica LD side effects

The most common side effects of Absorica LD in clinical trials (incidence ≥5%) include:

  • Dry lips, chapped lips
  • Dry skin
  • Back pain, arthralgia, muscle pain, headache
  • Dry eye, reduced visual acuity
  • Nasopharyngitis
  • Dermatitis
  • Blood creatine kinase increased
  • Upper respiratory tract infection

In rare instances, Absorica LD can cause more serious side effects. These can include:

  • Psychiatric Disorders
  • Serious skin reactions
  • Hearing Impairment
  • Hepatotoxicity – clinical hepatitis has been reported with isotretinoin use
  • Inflammatory bowel disease – patients experiencing abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, or severe diarrhea should discontinue treatment
  • Glucose and CPK abnormalities
  • Intracranial Hypertension – Isotretinoin has been associated with cases of intracranial hypertension (pseudotumor cerebri), some of which involved concomitant use of tetracyclines
  • Acute pancreatitis has been reported with isotretinoin use in patients with either elevated or normal serum triglyceride levels. If symptoms of pancreatitis occur, the patient should discontinue treatment and seek medical attention
  • Lipid Abnormalities

Absorica LD drug interactions

Absorica LD can interact with other medications. These include:

  • Vitamin A
  • Tetracyclines
  • St. John’s Wort
  • Oral contraceptives

This list is not exhaustive and other prescription drugs may interact with Absorica LD. Tell your healthcare provider about all of the medicines you take including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

Absorica LD contraindications

You should not use Absorica LD if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient isotretinoin
  • Have had an allergic reaction to any of the other ingredients in Absorica LD
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant – use 2 forms of birth control 1 month before starting Absorica LD, during treatment, and for at least 1 month after the last dose
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed

Talk to your doctor before using Absorica LD if you:

  • Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Absorica LD
