What is Addyi?

Addyi is an FDA-approved (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) medication manufactured by Sprout Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Addyi is used to treat premenopausal women (those who have not gone through menopause) with acquired, generalized hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) as seen by low sexual desire (low libido) that causes distress or personal problems, and is not due to a medical or psychiatric condition, problems in the relationship, or due to medication or other drug substances. Addyi is not recommended for the treatment of HSDD in postmenopausal women, men, or to enhance sexual performance.

What doses of Addyi are available?

Addyi is available in tablet form, in the following doses: 100 mg.

Addyi active ingredients

Addyi contains flibanserin as the active ingredient, a non-hormonal, multifunctional serotonin agonist antagonist.

Addyi side effects

The most common side effects of Addyi in clinical trials compared to placebo include:

  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Nausea
  • Tiredness
  • Insomnia
  • Dry mouth

In rare instances, Addyi can cause more serious side effects. These can include:

  • Hypotension (low blood pressure) and syncope
  • Central nervous system (CNS) depression – avoid activities that require full alertness, such as operating machinery or driving, until at least 6 hours after treatment

Addyi drug interactions

Addyi can interact with other medications. These include:

  • Oral Contraceptives and other weak CYP3A4 inhibitors
  • Strong CYP2C19 inhibitors
  • CYP3A4 inducers
  • Digoxin
  • Azole antifungals – fluconazole, ketoconazole
  • Calcium channel blockers – diltiazem, verapamil
  • Macrolide antibiotics – clarithromycin, erythromycin
  • Nefazodone
  • St. John’s wort
  • Other drugs that cause drowsiness
  • Alcohol use
  • Grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice

This list is not exhaustive and other prescription drugs may interact with Addyi. Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you are taking, including over-the-counter, and herbal supplements.

Addyi contraindications

You should not use Addyi if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient flibanserin
  • Are allergic to any of the other ingredients in Addyi
  • Have hepatic impairment
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed

Addyi is the trademark brand name for flibanserin manufactured by Sprout Pharmaceuticals, Inc. A generic version of flibanserin is not available. Generic drugs are generally cheaper than brand-name drugs, but you can still find Addyi savings through NiceRx.
