What is Aemcolo?

Aemcolo is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Aries Pharmaceuticals, Inc. a Cosmo Technologies Ltd. It is a rifamycin antibacterial agent used for the treatment of travelers’ diarrhea caused by noninvasive strains of Escherichia coli in adult patients.

Aemcolo has certain limitations of use. It is not used in patients with diarrhea complicated by fever and/or bloody stool or due to pathogens other than noninvasive strains of E. coli.

To reduce the development of drug-resistant bacteria and ensure the effectiveness of rifamycin and other antibacterial drugs, it should only be used to treat bacterial infections proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria.

What doses of Aemcolo are available?

Aemcolo is available as a delayed-release tablet, in the following doses: 194 mg.

Aemcolo uses Multi matrix technology (MMX), a coating that delays the release of the medication until it reaches the sites of infection. This results in a targeted release of medicine where it is needed. Take 2 tablets twice daily for three days with a glass of liquid, with or without food. Swallow the tablets whole. Do not crush, chew or break the tablets.

Please read the full prescribing information for additional information and always speak with a healthcare professional for medical advice about any changes to your dose so they can monitor and evaluate your condition.
