How do I apply for the Afstyla patient assistance program?

We make it as easy as possible to apply for the Afstyla patient assistance program. The first step is to complete our enrollment application. Tell us about any medications you are taking, including Afstyla. We will also ask for details about your healthcare provider, insurance, and your household income. This information is required by the pharmaceutical manufacturers who ship your medication.

If we determine that you may be eligible for Afstyla assistance, we will handle the application process for you. We will work directly with your healthcare provider to prepare your application documents. Once we have received the signed application and supporting documents, we will submit them to the patient assistance program on your behalf. Our service continues once you are enrolled in the Afstyla patient assistance program, and we will automatically request your Afstyla medication refills for up to 1 year.

What is Afstyla?

Afstyla is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by CSL Behring. Afstyla, antihemophilic factor (recombinant), single chain, is a recombinant, antihemophilic factor indicated in adults and children with hemophilia A (congenital Factor VIII deficiency) for:

  • On-demand treatment and control of bleeding disorder episodes
  • Routine prophylaxis to reduce the frequency of bleeding episodes
  • Perioperative management of bleeding

Afstyla is not recommended for the treatment of von Willebrand disease.

What doses of Afstyla are available?

Afstyla is available as a lyophilized powder in single-use vials containing nominally 250, 500, 1000, 1500, 2000, 2500, or 3000 International Units (IU).

The dose of Afstyla is based on body weight. For routine prophylaxis:

  • For adults and adolescents (12 years of age or older), the recommended starting regimen is 20-50 IU/kg 2 to 3 times weekly dosing
  • For children (<12 years), the recommended starting schedule is 30-50 IU/kg administered 2 to 3 times weekly.  More frequent or higher doses may be required in children <12 years of age due to the higher clearance in this age group

Afstyla active ingredients

Afstyla contains antihemophilic factor (recombinant) as the active ingredient.

Afstyla side effects

The most common side effects of Afstyla in clinical trials include:

  • Dizziness, headache
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Injection site reactions

In rare instances, Afstyla can cause more serious side effects. These can include:

  • Hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylaxis
  • The formation of neutralizing antibodies (inhibitors) to Factor VIII

Afstyla drug interactions

Other drugs may interact with Afstyla, including prescription drugs and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Tell your health care provider about all of your medicines including any supplements you are taking.

Afstyla contraindications

You should not use Afstyla if you:

  • Have had an allergic reaction to the active ingredient antihemophilic factor (recombinant)
  • Have had life-threatening hypersensitivity reactions to any of the other ingredients in Afstyla or hamster proteins

Talk to your doctor before using Afstyla if you:

  • Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Afstyla
  • Have heart disease
  • Have a latex allergy
  • Have inhibitors to Factor VIII
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed

Afstyla generic

Afstyla is the trademark brand name for antihemophilic factor (recombinant) manufactured by CSL Behring. A generic version of antihemophilic factor (recombinant) is not available. Generic drugs are generally cheaper than brand-name drugs, but you can still find Afstyla savings through NiceRx.
