What is Ancobon?

Ancobon (generic name flucytosine) is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Valeant Pharmaceuticals North America LLC. Ancobon is an antifungal medication that fights infections caused by fungi such as Candida and/or Cryptococcus. Ancobon is used to treat serious fungal infections of the blood, lungs, heart, central nervous system, and urinary tract. Ancobon is recommended in combination with amphotericin or liposomal amphotericin B for the treatment of cryptococcal meningitis and candidiasis.

What doses of Ancobon are available?

Ancobon is available in capsule form, in the following doses: 250 mg.

Take Ancobon with a full glass (8 ounces) of water. If you take more than one capsule per dose, swallow one capsule at a time over a 15-minute period to help prevent nausea and vomiting. If you miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up for the missed dose.

Ancobon side effects

The most common side effects of Ancobon in clinical trials include:

  • Gastrointestinal problems – nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea
  • Headaches
  • Dry mouth
  • Numbness, tingling, or burning pain in your hands or feet

In rare instances, Ancobon can cause more serious side effects. These can include:

  • Reduced heart rate, feeling fainting, slow breathing
  • Chest pain
  • Seizures
  • Problems with hearing
  • Hematologic effects – anemia, agranulocytosis, aplastic anemia, eosinophilia, leukopenia, pancytopenia, thrombocytopenia, and fatal cases of bone marrow aplasia
  • Reduced potassium levels – leg cramps, constipation, irregular heartbeats, increased thirst or urination
  • Kidney problems – painful or difficult urination, swelling in your feet or ankles, shortness of breath
  • Hepatic impairment – nausea, upper abdominal pain, itching, tiredness, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, yellowing of the skin or eyes

Ancobon drug interactions

Ancobon can interact with other medications. These include:

  • Clozapine
  • Cytosine
  • Deferiprone

This list is not exhaustive and other prescription drugs may interact with Ancobon.

Ancobon contraindications

You should not use Ancobon if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient flucytosine
  • Have had an allergic reaction to any of the other ingredients in Ancobon

Talk to your doctor before using Ancobon if you:

  • Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Ancobon
  • Have kidney impairment
  • Have a blood cell disorder or bone marrow disease
  • Have a weak immune system
  • Have an electrolyte imbalance
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed – It is not known whether flucytosine passes into breast milk

Ancobon generic

Ancobon is the trademark brand name for flucytosine manufactured by Valeant Pharmaceuticals North America LLC. A generic version of flucytosine is available. Generic drugs are generally cheaper than brand-name drugs, but you can still find Ancobon savings through NiceRx.
