What is Balversa?
Balversa is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceutical. Balversa is a kinase inhibitor for the treatment of adult patients with locally advanced or metastatic urothelial carcinoma (metastatic bladder cancer) that has:
- Susceptible FGFR3 or FGFR2 (fibroblast growth factor receptor) genetic alterations and has
- Progressed during or following at least one line of prior platinum-containing chemotherapy including within 12 months of neoadjuvant or adjuvant platinum-containing chemotherapy
Patients are selected for treatment based on an FDA-approved companion diagnostic for Balversa. Approval is under accelerated approval based on tumor response rate. Continued approval for this indication may depend upon verification and description of clinical benefit in confirmatory trials.
What doses of Balversa are available?
Balversa is available in tablet form, in the following doses: 3 mg, 4 mg, and 5 mg.
Confirm FGFR genetic alterations in tumor specimens prior to initiation of treatment. The recommended initial dosage is 8 mg orally once daily with a dose increase to 9 mg daily if criteria are met. You should swallow the tablets whole with or without food.

Balversa active ingredients
Balversa contains erdafitinib as the active ingredient.
Balversa side effects
The most common side effects of Balversa in clinical trials include:
- Muscle pain
- Musculoskeletal pain
- Diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain
- Decreased appetite
- Dry mouth
- Dry skin
- Dry eye
- Alopecia (hair loss)
- Creatinine increased, alanine aminotransferase increased, alkaline phosphatase increased, sodium decreased, albumin decreased
- Hemoglobin decreased
- Aspartate aminotransferase increased, magnesium decreased
- Palmar- plantar erythrodysesthesia syndrome, calcium increased
In rare instances, Balversa can cause more serious side effects. These can include:
- Ocular disorders – central serous retinopathy/retinal pigment epithelial detachment (CSR/RPED)
- Hyperphosphatemia – manage with dose modifications when required
- Embryo-fetal toxicity

Balversa drug interactions
Balversa can interact with other medications. These include:
- Strong CYP2C9 or CYP3A4 inhibitors
- Serum phosphate level-altering agents
- Avoid use with sensitive CYP3A4 substrates with narrow therapeutic indices
- OCT2 substrates
- P-gp substrates with narrow therapeutic indices
This list is not exhaustive and other prescription drugs may interact with Balversa.
You should not use Balversa if you:
- Are allergic to the active ingredient erdafitinib
- Are allergic to any of the other ingredients in Balversa
- Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant – use effective birth control when sexually active during treatment and for 1 month after the last dose
Talk to your doctor before using Balversa if you:
- Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Balversa
- Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed
Balversa is the trademark brand name for erdafitinib manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceutical. A generic version of erdafitinib is not available. Generic drugs are generally cheaper than brand-name drugs, but you can still find Balversa savings through NiceRx.

To receive a refund, you must send the letter of denial to us by fax to 888-517-7444, or by e-mail to [email protected] within 30 days of your receipt of such letter. The Refund is your sole and exclusive remedy for any fees you may wish to dispute.
