What is Banzel?
Banzel is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Eisai Inc. It is indicated for adjunctive treatment of seizures (epilepsy) associated with Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome (LGS) in pediatric patients 1 year of age and older, and in adults.
What doses of Banzel are available?
Banzel is available in film-coated tablet form, in the following doses: 200 mg, 400 mg, Oral suspension: 40 mg/mL

Banzel active ingredients
Banzel contains rufinamide, (an anti-epileptic drug), as the active ingredient. Rufinamide is thought to work by acting on the sodium channels in the brain that carry excessive electrical charges that may cause seizures.
Banzel side effects
The most common side effects of rufinamide in clinical trials compared to placebo include:
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Tiredness, sleepiness, drowsiness
- Nausea
In rare instances, Banzel can cause more serious side effects. These can include:
- New or worsening depression
- Suicidal thoughts and unusual changes in mood or behavior
- Central nervous system reactions
- Multi-organ hypersensitivity reactions

Banzel drug interactions
Banzel can interact with other medications. These include:
- Valproates
- Hormonal contraceptives may be less effective
- Drugs that shorten QT interval
- Alcohol
- Other CNS depressants
- Lamotrigine, triazolam
- Antagonized by phenytoin, phenobarbital, primidone, carbamazepine
This list is not exhaustive and other prescription drugs may interact with Banzel. Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
Banzel contraindications
You should not use Banzel if you:
- Are allergic to the active ingredient rufinamide
- Have had an allergic reaction to any of the other ingredients in Banzel
- Have familial short QT syndrome
- Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant – Banzel may make certain types of birth control pills less effective. Talk to your healthcare provider about the best birth control methods for you while you take Banzel. Patients who are pregnant are encouraged to enroll in the North American Antiepileptic Drug Pregnancy Registry. This can be done by calling the toll-free number 1-888-233-2334
Talk to your doctor for medical advice before using Banzel if you:
- Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Banzel
- Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed – It is not known if Banzel will pass into breast milk
- Have renal impairment – adjust the dose for the loss of drug upon dialysis
Banzel generic
Banzel is the trademark brand name for rufinamide manufactured by Eisai Inc. A generic version of rufinamide is available. Generic drugs are generally cheaper than brand-name drugs, but you can still find Banzel savings through NiceRx.

**If you do not receive medications because you were determined to be ineligible for the prescription assistance by the applicable pharmaceutical companies and you have a letter of denial, we will refund any fees you paid toward medications for which you did not qualify to receive prescription assistance (“Refund”).
To receive a refund, you must send the letter of denial to us by fax to 888-517-7444, or by e-mail to [email protected] within 30 days of your receipt of such letter. The Refund is your sole and exclusive remedy for any fees you may wish to dispute.
