What is Bevyxxa?

Bevyxxa is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Portola Pharmaceuticals, Inc. It is used for the prophylaxis of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in adult patients hospitalized for an acute medical illness who are at risk for thromboembolic complications due to moderate or severe restricted mobility and other risk factors for VTE. Bevyxxa is not recommended for use in patients with prosthetic heart valves.

What doses of Bevyxxa are available?

Bevyxxa is available in capsule form, in the following doses: 40 mg and 80 mg.

The recommended dose is an initial single dose of 160 mg, followed by 80 mg once daily, at the same time each day with food. The dose should be reduced for patients with severe renal impairment, or those on P-glycoprotein (P-GP) inhibitors.

Please read the prescribing information and always speak with your healthcare provider about any changes to your dose so they can monitor and evaluate your condition.

Bevyxxa active ingredients

Bevyxxa contains betrixaban an extremely potent factor Xa inhibitor. Approval of Bevyxxa is based on results from the Apex study, comparing oral betrixaban with injectable enoxaparin in assessing the prevention of VTE in high-risk patients. Efficacy was measured by a score comprising either the occurrence of asymptomatic proximal DVT (deep vein thrombosis) or symptomatic DVT, non-fatal pulmonary embolism (PE), or VTE-related death. Bevyxxa reduced the incidence of DVT and PE blood clots compared with those taking enoxaparin plus placebo with no significant increase in major bleeding.

Bevyxxa side effects

The most common side effects of Bevyxxa in clinical trials compared to placebo (incidence >5%) include:

  • Bleeding

In rare instances, Bevyxxa can cause more serious side effects. These can include:

  • Increased risk of bleeding – serious, potentially fatal bleeding
  • Severe renal impairment

Your doctor will assess the benefits of using Bevyxxa against your risk of side effects. Patients are encouraged to report negative side effects or adverse reactions of Bevyxxa to the FDA. Visit www.fda.gov/medwatch, or call 1-800-FDA-1088.
