What is Byooviz?

Byooviz is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Biogen Inc and Samsung Bioepis co., ltd. It is a vascular endothelial growth factor inhibitor (anti-VEGF), used to treat patients with:

  • Neovascular age-related macular degeneration (Wet AMD)
  • Macular edema following retinal vein occlusion (RVO) – RVO is a common cause of eye disease that can cause vision loss. Vision loss from CRVO results when fluid leaks into the center of the retina due to blocked blood vessels
  • Myopic choroidal neovascularization (mCNV)

Byooviz is not recommended for the treatment of patients with diabetic macular edema (DME) or diabetic retinopathy (DR).

Byooviz is the first biosimilar to Genentech’s Lucentis. It is also the first ophthalmology biosimilar treatment option to gain FDA approval in the United States. Biosimilar means that the biologic product is approved based on data showing that it is highly similar to an FDA-approved biological product, known as the reference product and that there are no clinical differences between the biosimilar product and the reference product.

What doses of Byooviz are available?

Byooviz is available in single-dose 0.05 mL vials for intravitreal injections, in the following doses: 10 mg/mL.

Always speak with your healthcare provider about any changes to your dose so they can monitor and evaluate your condition.
