What is Campral?

Campral is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Forest Laboratories, Inc. Campral is used to maintain abstinence from drinking alcohol in patients with alcohol dependence and alcohol abuse who are abstinent when treatment begins. It should be used as part of a psychosocial treatment program as it helps to reduce alcohol cravings.

Combining Campral with naltrexone helps to provide further support for alcohol abstinence. Naltrexone blocks the high you get when drinking, and acamprosate helps to reduce alcohol withdrawal symptoms that you may experience during the early stages of alcohol abstinence, such as sweating, anxiety, and sleep disturbances.

What doses of Campral are available?

The recommended dose is 666 mg (two 333 mg tablets) three times daily. Reduce the dose to one 333 mg tablet three times daily for patients with moderate renal impairment. If you miss a dose, take Campral as soon as you can, but skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next dose.

Always speak with your healthcare provider about any changes to your dose so they can monitor and evaluate your condition.
