What is Cayston?
Cayston contains the prescription medicine aztreonam, an antibiotic used to help improve your breathing. Cayston is used when you have cystic fibrosis with a specific bacterial (Pseudomonas aeruginosa) infection. Cayston should only be used when you have cystic fibrosis with this particular infection in your lungs. This helps to reduce drug resistance and maintains the effectiveness of Cayston and other antibacterials. Cayston is used in adults and children who are at least 7 years old. The safety and effectiveness of Cayston in children under 7 years of age has not been established.
Cayston active ingredients
Aztreonam binds to specific penicillin-binding proteins of specific bacteria. This leads to an inhibition of the production of bacterial cell walls and the death of the bacterial cell. The effectiveness of aztreonam is not decreased when there are lung secretions associated with cystic fibrosis.
Cayston should only be used with an Altera brand nebulizer. The Cayston inhalation powder medicine must be mixed with a liquid just before using it. The mixture should be gently swirled until the powder has dissolved. Pour the mixture into the handset of the nebulizer. Use the medicine right away. Do not save it for later use.
Cayston is normally used 3 times daily for 28 days. Your doses should be spaced at least 4 hours apart. Make sure you complete your course as skipping doses may increase your risk of further infection. It is important to know that Cayston will not treat a viral infection such as the common cold or flu.
