What is Cleocin Phosphate?

Cleocin Phosphate is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Pfizer. Cleocin Phosphate is a lincosamide antibiotic indicated for the treatment of serious infections caused by anaerobic bacteria with susceptibility to clindamycin. Anaerobes include Streptococcus pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus to name a few. This medication is not recommended for the treatment of meningitis.

What doses of Cleocin Phosphate are available?

Cleocin Phosphate is available in injection form. Clindamycin 150mg/ml solution for injection and infusion is compatible for at least 24 hours in dextrose 5% water and sodium chloride injection solutions.

It is for intravenous use only and not for intramuscular use. The concentration of clindamycin for infusion should not exceed 18mg per ml. The infusion rate must not exceed 30 mg per minute.

Cleocin Phosphate active ingredients

Cleocin Phosphate contains clindamycin phosphate as the active ingredient. It is a bacterial protein synthesis inhibitor and classed as an antibacterial agent. It is used for the treatment of bacterial infections in patients who have had an allergic reaction to penicillin.

The most common side effects of Cleocin Phosphate in clinical trials include:

  • Gastrointestinal disturbances – nausea, vomiting
  • Metallic taste in the mouth

In rare instances, Cleocin Phosphate can cause more serious side effects. These can include:

  • Clostridioides difficile (C. difficile) – associated diarrhea (CDAD)
  • Pseudomembranous colitis
  • Blood dyscrasias
  • Polyarthritis
  • Jaundice
  • Raised liver enzyme levels
  • Renal dysfunction
  • Cardiac arrest
  • Hepatotoxicity
  • Oral thrush or a new vaginal yeast infection
