What is Cleocin Phosphate?

Cleocin Phosphate is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Pfizer. Cleocin Phosphate is a lincosamide antibiotic indicated for the treatment of serious infections caused by anaerobic bacteria with susceptibility to clindamycin. Anaerobes include Streptococcus pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus to name a few. This medication is not recommended for the treatment of meningitis.

What doses of Cleocin Phosphate are available?

Cleocin Phosphate is available in injection form. Clindamycin 150mg/ml solution for injection and infusion is compatible for at least 24 hours in dextrose 5% water and sodium chloride injection solutions.

It is for intravenous use only and not for intramuscular use. The concentration of clindamycin for infusion should not exceed 18mg per ml. The infusion rate must not exceed 30 mg per minute.

Cleocin Phosphate active ingredients

Cleocin Phosphate contains clindamycin phosphate as the active ingredient. It is a bacterial protein synthesis inhibitor and classed as an antibacterial agent. It is used for the treatment of bacterial infections in patients who have had an allergic reaction to penicillin.

Cleocin Phosphate side effects

The most common side effects of Cleocin Phosphate in clinical trials include:

  • Gastrointestinal disturbances – nausea, vomiting
  • Metallic taste in the mouth

In rare instances, Cleocin Phosphate can cause more serious side effects. These can include:

  • Clostridioides difficile (C. difficile) – associated diarrhea (CDAD)
  • Pseudomembranous colitis
  • Blood dyscrasias
  • Polyarthritis
  • Jaundice
  • Raised liver enzyme levels
  • Renal dysfunction
  • Cardiac arrest
  • Hepatotoxicity
  • Oral thrush or a new vaginal yeast infection

Cleocin Phosphate drug interactions

Cleocin Phosphate can interact with other medications. These include:

  • Cholera Vaccine, Live
  • Erythromycin
  • Inhibitors of CYP3A4 and CYP3A5

This list is not exhaustive and other prescription drugs may interact with Cleocin Phosphate.

Cleocin Phosphate contraindications

You should not use Cleocin Phosphate if you:

  • Have a known hypersensitivity to the active ingredient clindamycin phosphate or lincomycin
  • Are allergic to any of the other ingredients in Cleocin Phosphate such as benzyl alcohol (a preservative)

Talk to your doctor before using Cleocin Phosphate if you:

  • Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Cleocin Phosphate
  • Have atopic syndrome
  • Have kidney disease
  • Have liver disease
  • Stomach or bowel problems such as colitis
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant – pregnant women should discuss treatment options prior to initiating treatment
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed – this drug passes into breast milk

Cleocin Phosphate generic

Cleocin Phosphate is the trademark brand name for clindamycin phosphate manufactured by Pfizer. A generic version of clindamycin phosphate is available. Generic drugs are generally cheaper than brand-name drugs, but you can still find Cleocin Phosphate savings through NiceRx.
