What is Cortef?

Cortef is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication distributed by Pharmacia & Upjohn Co., Division of Pfizer Inc. Cortef contains hydrocortisone a synthetic (man-made) version of cortisol made naturally in your body by the adrenal gland.

Hydrocortisone is a corticosteroid that works on the immune system. It is used to treat severe allergic reactions, adrenal problems, arthritis, asthma, blood or bone marrow problems, lupus, skin conditions, and ulcerative colitis.

What doses of Cortef are available?

Cortef is available as a hydrocortisone tablet, in the following doses: 5 mg.

Cortef side effects

The most common side effects of Cortef in clinical trials include:

  • Problems with vision, burning, dry, or itching eyes
  • Dizziness, headache
  • Irregular heartbeats
  • Mood changes, anxiety
  • Runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat, trouble breathing
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Weight gain

In rare instances, Cortef can cause more serious adverse effects. These can include:

  • Fluid and electrolyte disturbances – fluid retention, congestive heart failure, potassium loss, hypertension
  • Anemia
  • Muscle weakness
  • Osteoporosis
  • Gastrointestinal disturbances – peptic ulcer with possible perforation, bloating,
  • Pancreatitis
  • An increase in alanine transaminase, aspartate transaminase, alkaline phosphatase
  • Impaired wound healing
  • Cataracts
  • Glaucoma

Cortef drug interactions

Cortef can interact with other medications. These include:

  • Aldesleukin
  • Mifepristone
  • Other drugs that can cause bleeding/bruising such as clopidogrel
  • NSAIDs – ibuprofen, naproxen
  • Blood thinners – warfarin

This list is not exhaustive and other prescription drugs may interact with Cortef.

Cortef contraindications

You should not use Cortef if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient hydrocortisone
  • Are allergic to any of the other ingredients in Cortef
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant

Talk to your doctor about your medical condition before using Cortef if you:

  • Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Cortef
  • Have had an immunization with live vaccines
  • Have come into contact with people who have infections such as chickenpox, measles, and flu
  • Have cataracts
  • Have congestive heart failure
  • Have Cushing’s syndrome (adrenal gland problem)
  • Are diabetic
  • Have an eye infection such as herpes
  • Have glaucoma
  • Have hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Have an underactive thyroid
  • Have cirrhosis of the liver
  • Have Myasthenia gravis (severe muscle weakness)
  • Do not get enough vitamin D or calcium in your diet
  • Have osteoporosis
  • Have an adrenal tumor (pheochromocytoma)
  • Have diverticulitis or ulcerative colitis
  • Have a weak immune system
  • Have a fungal infection
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed – It is unknown if this drug passes into breast milk

Cortef is the trademark brand name for hydrocortisone distributed by Pharmacia & Upjohn Co., Division of Pfizer Inc. A generic version of hydrocortisone is available. Generic drugs are generally cheaper than brand-name drugs, but you can still find Cortef savings through NiceRx.
