What is Cystadrops?

Cystadrops (cysteamine ophthalmic solution) is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Recordati Rare Diseases Inc. Cysatdrops is classed as a cystine-depleting agent for the treatment of corneal cystine crystal deposits in adults and children with cystinosis. Cysteamine converts cystine to cysteine and cysteine- cysteamine mixed disulfides to reduce crystal accumulation in the cornea.

What doses of Cystadrops are available?

Cystadrops is available as an ophthalmic solution, in the following doses: 3.8 mg/mL (0.37%).

Instill one eye drop of Cystadrops in each eye, 4 times a day when you are awake. Do not use Cystadrops while wearing soft contact lenses. A preservative (benzalkonium chloride) in Cystadrops may stain your lenses. Use Cystadrops 15 minutes before putting your contact lenses in. Do not touch the dropper tip on any surface.

You should store new Cystadrops bottles in the refrigerator in the original carton between 36°F to 46°F (2°C to 8°C). After first opening, store the opened Cystadrops at room temperature between 68°F to 77°F (20°C to 25°C).

Cystadrops active ingredients

Cystadrops contain cysteamine 3.8 mg (equivalent to cysteamine hydrochloride 5.6 mg) as the active ingredient.

Cystadrops side effects

The most common adverse reactions of Cystadrops in clinical trials include:

  • Eye pain
  • Eye irritation
  • Ocular hyperemia
  • Instillation site discomfort
  • Eye pruritus
  • Increased lacrimation
  • Ocular deposits
  • Blurred vision
  • Visual impairment

In rare instances, Cystadrops can cause more serious side effects. These can include:

  • Benign intracranial hypertension is associated with oral cysteamine treatment. There have also been reports of ophthalmic use, however, all of these patients were also using oral cysteamine

Other drugs may interact with Cystadrops, including prescription drugs and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Tell your health care provider about all of your medicines including any supplements you are taking.

Cystadrops contraindications

You should not use Cystadrops if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient cysteamine
  • Are allergic to any of the other ingredients in Cystadrops
  • Are younger than 18 years of age

Talk to your doctor before using Cystadrops if you:

  • Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Cystadrops
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed

Cystadrops is the trademark brand name for cysteamine manufactured by Recordati Rare Diseases Inc. A generic version of cysteamine is not available. Generic drugs are generally cheaper than brand-name drugs, but you can still find Cystadrops savings through NiceRx.
