What is Cystagon?

Cystagon is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Mylan Laboratories Limited. Cystagon is used to reduce the amount of cystine (an amino acid) in the body. It is indicated for the treatment of nephropathic cystinosis, a rare genetic condition that causes a build-up of cystine levels in your kidneys and other organs. Too much cystine in the urine can cause kidney stones, renal impairment, or other medical problems.

What doses of Cystagon are available?

Cystagon is available in immediate-release capsule form, in the following doses: 50 mg, 150 mg.

Cystagon capsules should be swallowed whole with food. If you cannot swallow a capsule whole, open the capsule and mix the medicine with certain foods. Your doctor may recommend you use oral granules. If you miss a dose take it as soon as you remember unless it is near the time of your next scheduled dose. If this is the case, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at your regular time. Store Cystagon at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light.

Always speak with your healthcare provider for medical advice about any changes to your dose so they can monitor and evaluate your condition.

Cystagon active ingredients

Cystagon contains cysteamine bitartrate as the active ingredient. Cystagon reacts with cystine to form cysteine and a cysteine-cysteamine salt which is removed from cells. The amount of cystine in the organs is reduced limiting the damage to your organs.
