Am I eligible for the Demser patient assistance program?

You could receive your Demser without paying the full retail price if you meet the eligibility criteria for assistance. The eligibility requirements are set by the pharmaceutical companies that are providing assistance programs. At NiceRx, we review each application individually, although the main factors considered by most programs are:

  • I am a permanent, legal resident of the United States or Puerto Rico
  • I am uninsured or my insurance doesn’t cover my medication
  • I meet certain income eligibility requirements

How do I apply for Demser patient assistance?

We do everything that we can to take the hassle and stress out of applying for patient assistance programs. Simply start by filling in our enrollment application. We will ask for details about your healthcare provider, your insurance, and your household income. This information is required by the pharmaceutical companies you are applying to for assistance. We may also be able to help you access patient assistance for other medications that you have been prescribed, so be sure to tell us about any medications you are taking as well as Demser.

NiceRx will review the information you have provided, and if we determine that you may be eligible for assistance, we will seek to enroll you in the Demser patient assistance program. We will handle the enrollment process for you by working with your healthcare provider and preparing all the required paperwork for your doctor to sign. We will also request your Demser medication refills on your behalf for up to 1 year once you are enrolled in the program.

Is NiceRx a Demser coupon provider?

At NiceRx, we help eligible individuals access the Demser patient assistance program. This means that we are not a Demser coupon, a Demser discount card, or a Demser copay card provider. We do not offer any medication trial offers, or free Demser samples.

Can NiceRx help me get Demser cheaper if I have insurance?

We may be able to help you if you have insurance, including if your insurance company will not pay for your Demser medication, or if you have a high copay or coinsurance responsibility. We may even be able to assist if you do not have insurance. Please fill in our enrollment application to find out more.

What is Demser?

Demser is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Bausch Health. It is used in the treatment of patients with pheochromocytoma for:

  1. Preoperative preparation for surgery
  2. The management of patients when surgery is not appropriate
  3. Chronic treatment of patients with malignant pheochromocytoma (tumor of the adrenal glands)

Demser is not recommended for the treatment of essential hypertension.

What doses of Demser are available?

Demser is available in capsule form, in the following doses: 250 mg.

The recommended initial dosage for adults and children 12 years of age and older is 250 mg orally four times daily. This may be increased by 250 mg to 500 mg every day to a maximum of 4.0 g/day in divided doses. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can, but skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next dose. Store Demser capsules at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Make sure you drink 6 to 8 full glasses of water each day when you are treated with Demser, to prevent crystals from forming in your urine.

Please read the full drug information and always speak with a healthcare professional for medical advice about any changes to your dose so they can monitor and evaluate your condition.

Demser active ingredients

Demser contains metyrosine as the active ingredient. It is classed as a tyrosine hydroxylase inhibitor. Metyrosine prevents the tumor from making certain natural substances (catecholamines) that increase blood pressure and heart rate. Lowering the amount of catecholamines reduces the risk of hypertensive crisis (a very serious attack of high blood pressure).

Demser side effects

The most common side effects of Demser in clinical trials include:

  • Drowsiness, tiredness, dizziness, lightheadedness, dry mouth, and diarrhea

In rare instances, Demser can cause more serious side effects. These can include:

  • Drooling
  • Uncontrolled movements, muscle stiffness, shaking
  • Decrease in sexual ability
  • Swelling of the breast
  • Changes in mood such as confusion, depression, severe anxiety
  • Difficulty urinating, blood in the urine

Your doctor will assess the benefits of using Demser against your risk of side effects. Patients are encouraged to report negative side effects or adverse reactions of Demser to the FDA. Visit www.fda.gov/medwatch, or call 1-800-FDA-1088.

Demser drug interactions

Demser can interact with other medications. These include:

  • Phenothiazines or haloperidol
  • Alcohol or other CNS depressants – increases their sedative effects

This list is not exhaustive and other prescription drugs may interact with Demser.

Demser contraindications
