What is Dexcom G6?
The Dexcom G6 is manufactured by Dexcom, Inc., a company that specializes in diabetes care technology. The Dexcom G6 CGM system is FDA-permitted as the first real-time, integrated continuous glucose monitoring system (iCGM) that makes diabetes treatment decisions and diabetes management with zero fingersticks or calibration possible, giving greater freedom and flexibility for patients 2 years of age and older.
In 2021, the Diabetes Canada Clinical Practice Guidelines review committee updated its recommendations for glucose monitoring, stating that real-time CGM (rtCGM), like the Dexcom G6, should be used by individuals with type 1 diabetes treated with basal-bolus insulin injections or an insulin pump in order to reduce A1C and increase time in range, reduce duration and incidence of hypoglycemia and improve quality of life in adults.
Using the auto-applicator, you can insert the sensor and then snap in the transmitter. You will then be able to view real-time glucose data from the transmitter via a selected display device. Real-time glucose readings are sent straight to your smart device or receiver, as frequently as every five minutes. Dexcom G6 also enables you to receive the urgent low soon alert, and other notifications on your display device, which can help warn you of high or low glucose levels associated with reduced hypoglycemia, without a corresponding increase in hyperglycemia.
You can use the Dexcom Share feature available in the Dexcom G6 CGM app to share your glucose data with up to 10 followers. Internet connectivity is required for data sharing. If you choose to allow your followers the ability to receive alert notifications, they can help you stay within range. Followers should always confirm readings on the Dexcom G6 app or receiver before making treatment decisions. Followers must have compatible smart devices to use the Dexcom Follow app. To view a list of compatible smart devices, visit dexcom.com/compatibility.
The Dexcom clarity software and reports can help you facilitate better conversations about your Dexcom G6 glucose data during telehealth or in-person visits.
Failure to use the Dexcom G6 continuous glucose monitoring system (G6) and its components according to the instructions for use provided with your device and available at https://www.dexcom.com/safety-information and to properly consider all indications, contraindications, warnings, precautions, and cautions in those instructions for use may result in you missing a severe hypoglycemia (low blood glucose) or hyperglycemia (high blood glucose) occurrence and/or make a treatment decision that may result in injury.
If your glucose alerts and readings from the G6 do not match your symptoms or expectations, use a blood glucose meter to make diabetes treatment decisions.
