What is Diflucan?

Diflucan is an FDA-approved medication distributed by Pfizer, Roerig. Diflucan is an oral azole antifungal treatment used for fungal and yeast infections (Candida), which can affect any part of the body including the mouth, throat, lungs, genitals, bladder, and blood.

Diflucan is also used in patients with weak immune systems caused by treatments for cancer, bone marrow transplant, or AIDS to prevent fungal infections, and is also used to treat cryptococcal meningitis in people with HIV or AIDS.

What doses of Diflucan are available?

Diflucan is available as a tablet or powder for oral suspension, in the following doses: 50 mg.

Diflucan side effects

The most common side effects of fluconazole in clinical trials include:

  • Nausea
  • Stomach pain, diarrhea, upset stomach
  • Headache, dizziness
  • Change in sense of taste

In rare instances, Diflucan can cause more serious side effects. These can include:

  • Irregular heartbeats
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sudden dizziness and feeling light-headed
  • Seizures
  • Skin rash
  • Liver problems – loss of appetite, upper right side abdominal pain, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)

Diflucan drug interactions

Diflucan can interact with other medications. These include:

  • Antihistamines – terfenadine
  • Opioid pain killers – fentanyl, methadone
  • Immunosuppressants – tofacitinib
  • Drugs known to block potassium channels or QT prolongation
  • Antibiotics – erythromycin
  • Antivirals – saquinavir
  • Blood thinners – warfarin
  • Oral diabetes medicine – glipizide
  • Treatments for the heart or blood pressure – amiodarone, losartan, quinidine, tolvaptan
  • Treatments for depression or mental illness – amitriptyline, nortriptyline, pimozide
  • NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug) – celecoxib
  • Anticonvulsants – midazolam, phenytoin, carbamazepine

This list is not exhaustive and other prescription drugs may interact with Diflucan. Tell your healthcare provider about all your current medicines. This includes prescription and over-the-counter medicines, supplements, vitamins, and herbal products.

Diflucan contraindications

You should not use Diflucan if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient fluconazole, ketoconazole, itraconazole, or voriconazole
  • Have had an allergic reaction to any of the other ingredients in Diflucan
  • Have liver or kidney disease
  • Have a heart rhythm disorder, or a history of long QT syndrome
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant – Use effective birth control (contraceptive) to prevent pregnancy while taking this medicine and for at least 1 week after your last dose. Medications applied in or around the vagina should be considered first for vaginal yeast infections (thrush)

Talk to your doctor before using Diflucan if you:

  • Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Diflucan
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed

Diflucan is the trademark brand name for fluconazole distributed by Pfizer, Roerig. A generic version of fluconazole is available. Generic drugs are generally cheaper than brand-name drugs, but you can still find Diflucan savings through NiceRx.
