What is Giapreza?

Giapreza is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by La Jolla Pharmaceutical Company. Approval of Giapreza was based on the Angiotensin II for the Treatment of High-Output Shock (ATHOS-3) trial. Giapreza is a vasoconstrictor, used to increase blood pressure (refractory hypotension (low blood pressure)) in adults with septic shock or other distributive shocks.

What doses of Giapreza are available?

Giapreza is available in injection form, in the following doses: 2.5 mg/mL and 5 mg/2 mL.

Administer as an intravenous infusion at 20 nanograms/kg/min. Titrate every 5 minutes by increments of up to 15 ng/kg/min as needed. The maximum dose should not exceed 80 ng/kg/min in the first 3 hours. The maintenance dose should not exceed 40 ng/kg/min.

Giapreza side effects

The most common adverse effects of Giapreza in clinical trials compared to placebo include:

  • Thromboembolic events such as deep vein thrombosis. Use concurrent venous thromboembolism (VTE) prophylaxis
  • Thrombocytopenia
  • Tachycardia
  • Fungal infection
  • Delirium
  • Acidosis
  • Hyperglycemia
  • Peripheral ischemia

Giapreza drug interactions

Giapreza can interact with other medications. These include:

  • Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors
  • Angiotensin II Receptor Blockers (ARB)

Giapreza contraindications

You should not use Giapreza if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient angiotensin II
  • Are allergic to any of the other ingredients in Giapreza

  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed

Giapreza is the trademark brand name for angiotensin II manufactured by La Jolla Pharmaceutical Company. A generic version of angiotensin II is not available. Generic drugs are generally cheaper than brand-name drugs, but you can still find Giapreza savings through NiceRx.
