What is Kazano?

Kazano is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Takeda Pharmaceuticals America, Inc. It is a dipeptidyl-peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor and a biguanide combination used with diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Kazano is not recommended for the treatment of type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

Lactic acidosis can occur due to metformin accumulation. This risk increases with conditions such as sepsis, dehydration, excess alcohol intake, hepatic impairment, renal impairment, and acute congestive heart failure. Symptoms include malaise, muscle pain, respiratory distress, increasing somnolence, and nonspecific abdominal distress. If acidosis is suspected, stop treatment and hospitalize the patient immediately.

What doses of Kazano are available?

Kazano is available in tablet form, in the following doses: 12.5 mg alogliptin and 500 mg metformin HCl, 12.5 mg alogliptin and 1000 mg metformin HCl.

Kazano should be taken twice daily with food. Adjust the dose based on effectiveness and tolerability. Do not exceed the maximum recommended daily dose of 25 mg alogliptin and 2000 mg metformin HCl.

Please read the drug information and medication guide provided and always speak with your healthcare provider for medical advice about any changes to your dose so they can monitor and evaluate your condition.
