What is Korsuva?

Korsuva is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Cara Therapeutics Inc. and Vifor Pharma. FDA approval of Korsuva is as a kappa-opioid receptor agonist (KOR) that targets the body’s peripheral nervous system and is used to treat moderate-to-severe pruritus associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD-aP) in adults hemodialysis patients

Korsuva has certain limitations of use. It has not been studied in peritoneal dialysis patients and is not recommended for use in these individuals.

What doses of Korsuva are available?

Korsuva is available as an intravenous injection form, in the following doses: 50 mcg/mL.

Korsuva injection vials are for single-dose use only. Administer within 60 minutes of syringe preparation. See the full prescribing information and always speak with your healthcare provider about any changes to your dose so they can monitor and evaluate your condition.

Korsuva active ingredients

Korsuva contains difelikefalin as the active ingredient.

Korsuva side effects

The most common adverse reactions of Korsuva in clinical trials compared to placebo include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Dizziness, headache, nausea
  • Gait disturbances including falls
  • Hyperkalemia
  • Somnolence
  • Mental status change

In rare instances, Korsuva can cause more serious side effects. These can include:

  • May impair mental or physical abilities such as driving or operating machinery

Korsuva drug interactions

Other drugs may interact with Korsuva, including prescription drugs and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Tell your health care provider about all of your medications including any supplements you are taking.

Korsuva contraindications

You should not use Korsuva if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient difelikefalin
  • Are allergic to any of the other ingredients in Korsuva

Talk to your doctor before using Korsuva if you:

  • Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Korsuva
  • Are taking centrally-acting depressant medications, sedating antihistamines, and opioid analgesics
  • Have hepatic impairment
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed

Korsuva generic

Korsuva is the trademark brand name for difelikefalin manufactured by Cara Therapeutics Inc. and Vifor Pharma. A generic version of difelikefalin is not available. Generic drugs are generally cheaper than brand-name drugs, but you can still find Korsuva savings through NiceRx.
