If you are eligible for the Kuvan patient assistance program you can receive your medication for free. Our monthly service fee of $49 per medication covers the cost of our services in applying for the program and requesting your ongoing refills on your behalf. If you obtain your Kuvan through NiceRx, you will only pay $49 a month regardless of the retail price of your medication.

Am I eligible for the Kuvan patient assistance program?

You could receive your Kuvan without paying the full retail price if you meet the eligibility criteria for assistance. The eligibility requirements are set by the pharmaceutical companies that are providing assistance programs. At NiceRx, we review each application individually, although the main factors considered by most programs are:

How do I apply for Kuvan patient assistance?

We do everything that we can to take the hassle and stress out of applying for patient assistance programs. Simply start by filling in our enrollment application. We will ask for details about your healthcare provider, your insurance, and your household income. This information is required by the pharmaceutical companies you are applying to for assistance. We may also be able to help you access patient assistance for other medications that you have been prescribed, so be sure to tell us about any medications you are taking as well as Kuvan.

NiceRx will review the information you have provided, and if we determine that you may be eligible for assistance, we will seek to enroll you in the Kuvan patient assistance program. We will handle the enrollment process for you by working with your healthcare provider and preparing all the required paperwork for your doctor to sign. We will also request your Kuvan medication refills on your behalf for up to 1 year once you are enrolled in the program.

What is Kuvan?

Kuvan is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc. Kuvan is a synthetic form of BH4, the cofactor for the enzyme phenylalanine hydroxylase, indicated to reduce blood phenylalanine (Phe) concentrations in patients with hyperphenylalaninemia (HPA) due to tetrahydrobiopterin-(BH4-) responsive Phenylketonuria (PKU). Kuvan is used in conjunction with a Phe-restricted diet.

What doses of Kuvan are available?

Kuvan is available in tablet form, in the following doses: Kuvan tablets, 100 mg.

Kuvan is available in tablet powder form, in the following doses: Kuvan powder for oral solution, 100 mg.

The recommended starting dose of Kuvan in patients 1 month to 6 years is 10 mg/kg once daily. For patients, 7 years and older the recommended starting dose of Kuvan is 10 to 20 mg/kg once daily. Doses of Kuvan may be adjusted in the range of 5 to 20 mg/kg once daily.

Take Kuvan with a meal. Swallow the tablets whole or after mixing in a small amount of soft foods or dissolving in water or apple juice. Swallow the oral solution after mixing the powder in a small amount of soft foods or dissolving it in water or apple juice.

Kuvan active ingredients

Kuvan contains sapropterin dihydrochloride as the active ingredient.

Kuvan side effects

The most common side effects of Kuvan in clinical trials compared to placebo include:

  • Headache
  • Rhinorrhea, sore throat, cough, nasal congestion
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting

In rare instances, Kuvan can cause more serious side effects. These can include:

  • Hypersensitivity reactions including anaphylaxis
  • Gastritis
  • Increased risk for low levels of blood Phe in children younger than 7 years old treated with doses of 20 mg/kg per day
  • Hyperactivity

Get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including rash, itching, swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.

Kuvan drug interactions

No drug interaction studies were performed, However, other drugs may interact with Kuvan including prescription drugs and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Tell your health care provider about all of your medicines including any supplements you are taking.

Kuvan contraindications

You should not use Kuvan if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient sapropterin dihydrochloride
  • Have had an allergic reaction to any of the other ingredients in Kuvan
  • Are younger than 1 month old

Talk to your doctor about your medical condition before using Kuvan if you:

  • Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Kuvan
  • Have liver impairment
  • Have a history of stomach ulcers or bleeding
  • Suffer from seizures
  • Are taking levodopa, methotrexate, or any medication to treat erectile dysfunction, such as sildenafil, tadalafil, or vardenafil
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed

Kuvan generic

Kuvan is the trademark brand name for sapropterin dihydrochloride manufactured by BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc. A generic version of sapropterin dihydrochloride is available. Generic drugs are generally cheaper than brand-name drugs, but you can still find Kuvan savings through NiceRx.
