What is Lamictal XR?

Lamictal XR is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline. It is used as:

  • Adjunctive therapy for primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures (epilepsy) and partial-onset seizures with or without secondary generalization in patients aged 13 years and older
  • Conversion to monotherapy in patients aged 13 years and older with partial-onset seizures who are receiving treatment with a single AED

Cases of life-threatening serious skin rashes, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis, and/or rash-related death have been caused by lamotrigine. The rate is greater in pediatric patients than in adults. Additional factors that may increase the risk of rash include coadministration with valproate, exceeding the recommended initial dose of Lamictal XR, or exceeding the recommended dose escalation for Lamictal XR. It is not possible to predict which rashes will prove to be serious or life-threatening. Lamictal XR should be discontinued at the first sign of rash unless the rash is clearly not drug-related.

What doses of Lamictal XR are available?

Lamictal XR is available in extended-release tablet form, in the following doses: 25 mg, 50 mg, 100 mg, 200 mg, 250 mg, and 300 mg.
