What is Leqvio?

Leqvio is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Novartis. Leqvio is a small interfering RNA (siRNA) directed to PCSK9 (proprotein convertase subtilisin kexin type 9) mRNA.

Leqvio has FDA approval as an adjunct in combination with diet and maximum tolerated statin therapy and lipid-lowering medicines to treat adults with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH) or clinical atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), who need additional lowering of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels (LDL-C, LDL cholesterol).

It is not known if Leqvio decreases problems related to high cholesterol, such as heart attacks or stroke, and its effects on cardiovascular morbidity and mortality have not been determined.

What doses of Leqvio are available?

Leqvio is available in injection form, in the following doses: 284 mg/1.5 mL (189 mg/mL) in a single-dose prefilled syringe.

The recommended dosage in combination with maximally tolerated statin therapy is 284 mg as a single subcutaneous injection into the abdomen, upper arm, or thigh, initially, at 3 months, and then every 6 months.
