What is Levoxyl?

Levoxyl is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Pfizer, Inc. Levoxyl (levothyroxine) is used when your thyroid gland does not produce enough of the hormone normally produced on its own.

Levoxyl is used in pediatric and adult patients for:

  • Hypothyroidism – as a replacement in primary (thyroidal), secondary (pituitary), and tertiary (hypothalamic) congenital or acquired hypothyroidism
  • Pituitary thyrotropin (Thyroid-stimulating hormone, TSH) suppression, alongside surgery and radioiodine therapy in the management of well-differentiated thyroid cancer

Levoxyl is not recommended for the suppression of benign thyroid nodules and nontoxic diffuse goiter in iodine-sufficient patients, or for the treatment of hypothyroidism during the recovery phase of subacute thyroiditis. Thyroid hormones are not recommended for the treatment of obesity or for weight loss.

What doses of Levoxyl are available?

Levoxyl is available in tablet form, in the following doses: 25 mcg, 50 mcg, 75 mcg, 88 mcg, 100 mcg, 112 mcg, 125 mcg, 137 mcg, 150 mcg, 175 mcg, 200 mcg.

Take Levoxyl once daily, on an empty stomach, half to one hour before breakfast with a full glass of water. Your starting dose will depend on factors such as age, body weight, cardiovascular status, other medical conditions and medications, food, and the condition being treated.

Certain medications such as cholestyramine, colestipol, colesevelam, antacids, sucralfate, simethicone, calcium supplements, orlistat, and sevelamer, can decrease the amount of thyroid hormone that is absorbed by your body. Separate Levoxyl from these medications by at least 4 hours.

Read the full patient information provided and always speak with a healthcare professional for medical advice about any changes to your dose so they can monitor and evaluate your condition.
