What is Livtencity?

Livtencity is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Takeda Pharmaceuticals company limited. Livtencity has FDA approval for post-transplant cytomegalovirus infection (CMV) and disease in adults and children transplant recipients, 12 years of age and older weighing at least 77 pounds (35 kg) who have had a solid organ transplant (SOT) when their infection or disease does not respond to treatment (refractory to treatment (with or without genotypic resistance) with the medicines ganciclovir, valganciclovir, cidofovir or foscarnet.

What doses of Livtencity are available?

Livtencity is available in tablet form, in the following doses: 200 mg.

The recommended dosing regimen in pediatric patients 12 years of age and older and weighing at least 35 kg is the same as that in adult transplant patients. No dosage adjustment is required for patients over 65 years of age.

Livtencity active ingredients

Livtencity’s mechanism of action is through its antiviral activity by competitive inhibition of the protein kinase activity of the post-transplant CMV infection/disease enzyme pUL97. Maribavir inhibited human CMV replication in virus yield reduction, DNA hybridization, and plaque reduction assays in human lung fibroblast cell line (MRC-5), human embryonic kidney (HEK), and human foreskin fibroblast (MRHF) cells.

Livtencity side effects

The most common side effects of Livtencity in clinical trials include:

  • Taste disturbance
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Fatigue

In rare instances, Livtencity can cause more serious adverse effects. These can include:

  • Virologic failure due to resistance can occur during and after treatment – Monitor CMV DNA levels and check for maribavir resistance if the transplant patient is not responding to treatment
  • At 150 mg/kg/day in male mice only, an increased incidence of hemangioma, hemangiosarcoma, and combined hemangioma/hemangiosarcoma was observed

Livtencity drug interactions

Livtencity can interact with other medications. These include:

  • Antiarrhythmics
  • Strong inducers of CYP3A4 – except for selected anticonvulsants
  • Antimycobacterials
  • HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitors
  • Immunosuppressant drugs that are CYP3A4 and/or P-glycoprotein (P-gp) substrates – tacrolimus, cyclosporine, sirolimus, and everolimus. Monitor immunosuppressant drug levels throughout treatment, especially following initiation and after discontinuation of Livtencity, and adjust the immunosuppressant dose

Livtencity contraindications

You should not use Livtencity if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient maribavir
  • Are allergic to any of the other ingredients in Livtencity

Talk to your doctor before using Livtencity if you:

  • Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Livtencity
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed
  • Are pregnant or plan to become pregnant

Livtencity generic

Livtencity is the trademark brand name for maribavir manufactured by Takeda Pharmaceuticals company limited. A generic version of maribavir is not available. Generic drugs are generally cheaper than brand-name drugs, but you can still find Livtencity savings through NiceRx.
