What is Lo Loestrin Fe?

Lo Loestrin Fe is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Abbvie. Lo Loestrin Fe is a combination birth control pill that prevents ovulation (the release of an egg from an ovary) and prevents pregnancy in women. Lo Loestrin Fe will also cause changes in your cervical mucus and uterine lining. These changes make it more difficult for sperm to reach the uterus and for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus.

What doses of Lo Loestrin Fe are available?

Lo Loestrin Fe is available in tablet form, in the following doses: 24 blue tablets (active), containing 1 mg norethindrone acetate and 10 mcg ethinyl estradiol, 2 white tablets (active), containing 10 mcg ethinyl estradiol, and 2 brown tablets (non-hormonal placebo), each containing 75 mg ferrous fumarate.

Lo Loestrin Fe drug interactions

Lo Loestrin Fe can interact with other medications. These include:

  • Drugs or herbal products that induce certain enzymes, including CYP3A4 – use a backup method or alternative method of contraception
  • Certain combination products used to treat chronic hepatitis C – ombitasvir/paritaprevir/ritonavir with or without dasabuvir
  • Griseofulvin
  • Rifamycins such as rifampin
  • St. John’s wort
  • Drugs used to treat seizures such as barbiturates, carbamazepine, felbamate, phenytoin, primidone, topiramate
  • HIV drugs such as nelfinavir, nevirapine, ritonavir

Lo Loestrin Fe contraindications

You should not use Lo Loestrin Fe if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient norethindrone acetate or ethinyl estradiol
  • Are allergic to any of the other ingredients in Lo Loestrin Fe
  • Have a high risk of arterial or venous thrombotic diseases
  • Have breast cancer or other estrogens- or progestin-sensitive cancer
  • Have liver tumors or liver disease
  • Have undiagnosed abnormal uterine bleeding
  • Have untreated or uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • Have heart disease (chest pain, coronary artery disease, history of heart attack, stroke, or increased risk of blood clots)
  • Smoke – increases the risk of serious cardiovascular events from combination oral contraceptive (COC) use
  • Have a history of jaundice caused by pregnancy or birth control pills
  • Take any hepatitis C medication containing ombitasvir/paritaprevir/ritonavir
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant

  • Have high cholesterol or triglycerides, or if you are overweight
