What is Lopid?

Lopid is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Pfizer. Lopid contains gemfibrozil, which belongs to a group of drugs known as fibrates. It is used with diet to help lower triglyceride levels and treat very high cholesterol levels in people with pancreatitis. It may also help to lower “bad” cholesterol (LDL) and raise “good” cholesterol (HDL) levels.

Lopid is also used to reduce the risk of heart disease, (strokes, heart attack, or other heart complications) in certain people with high cholesterol and triglycerides who have not had an adequate response to weight loss, dietary therapy, exercise, or other medicines.

What doses of Lopid are available?

Lopid is available in tablet form, in the following doses: 600 mg.

Take Lopid 30 minutes before breakfast and your evening meal. You may need regular medical tests while being treated with Lopid. Store Lopid tablets at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light.

Lopid active ingredients

Lopid contains gemfibrozil as the active ingredient.

Lopid side effects

The most common side effects of gemfibrozil in clinical trials include:

  • Abdominal pain, indigestion, diarrhea
  • Tingly or numb feeling
  • Dizziness, drowsiness
  • Blurred vision
  • Muscle or joint pain
  • Loss of interest in sex
  • Impotence

In rare instances, Lopid can cause more serious side effects. These can include:

  • Breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue, leading to kidney failure
  • Unexplained muscle pain
  • Tenderness, or weakness
  • Pyrexia, unusual tiredness, and dark-colored urine
  • Pain in your upper stomach, yellowing of your skin or eyes, pain when urinating, blurred vision, eye pain, or seeing halos around lights
  • Low blood cell counts

Lopid drug interactions

Lopid can interact with other medications. These include:

  • Colchicine
  • Statins – atorvastatin, fluvastatin, lovastatin, pravastatin, rosuvastatin, simvastatin
  • Bile acid-binding resins – cholestyramine or colestipol. Take gemfibrozil at least 1 hour before or 4-6 hours after taking these medications
  • Pioglitazone
  • Repaglinide
  • Certain combinations used to treat chronic hepatitis C – such as ombitasvir/paritaprevir/ritonavir/dasabuvir

This list is not exhaustive and other prescription drugs may interact with Lopid. Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take, including prescription, over-the-counter, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

Lopid contraindications

You should not use Lopid if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient gemfibrozil
  • Are allergic to any of the other ingredients in Lopid
  • Have severe liver disease, kidney disease, or gallbladder disease

Talk to your doctor before using Lopid if you:

  • Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Lopid
  • Have gallstones
  • Take warfarin
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed

Lopid generic

Lopid is the trademark brand name for gemfibrozil manufactured by Pfizer. A generic version of gemfibrozil is available. Generic drugs are generally cheaper than brand-name drugs, but you can still find Lopid savings through NiceRx.
