  • Submit documents

We will request documents to be submitted by you and your healthcare provider that are required by the pharmaceutical company to complete your enrollment.

  • Receive medication

Once approved, the pharmaceutical company typically ships a 90-day supply of medication to your home or healthcare provider’s address. Final acceptance is determined by the pharmaceutical company.

What is Namenda XR?

Namenda XR is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by AbbVie Inc. It contains memantine HCl, an NMDA receptor antagonist used to treat moderate to severe dementia of the Alzheimer’s type.

Namenda XR is not a cure for Alzheimer’s disease but helps to improve memory, awareness, and the ability to perform daily tasks.

What doses of Namenda XR are available?

Namenda XR is available as an extended-release capsule dosage form, in the following doses: 7 mg, 14 mg, 21 mg, and 28 mg. Namenda XR is also available in a titration pack, containing 28 capsules (7 x 7 mg, 7 x 14 mg, 7 x 21 mg, 7 x 28 mg).

The initial dose is 7 mg once daily, with a maintenance dose of 28 mg once daily. A target dose of 14 mg once daily is recommended in patients with severe renal impairment. Your dose is based on your medical condition.

Swallow the capsules whole. Do not crush or chew. If you have difficulty swallowing the capsules you may open the capsule and sprinkle the contents on applesauce. Swallow the mixture right away without chewing. If you miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the usual time.

Store Namenda XR at room temperature away from light and moisture. Also, read the patient information leaflet provided and always speak with a healthcare professional for medical advice about any changes to your dose so they can monitor and evaluate your condition.

Namenda XR active ingredients

The active ingredient of Namenda XR is memantine hydrochloride.

Namenda XR side effects

The most common side effects of Namenda XR in clinical trials include:

  • Headache
  • Diarrhea, constipation, stomach pain, vomiting
  • Increased weight
  • Dizziness
  • Back pain
  • Drowsiness, somnolence
  • Loss of bladder control

In rare instances, Namenda XR can cause more serious side effects. These can include:

  • Raised urine pH, decreasing the urinary elimination of memantine resulting in increased plasma levels of memantine
  • Mental and mood changes such as depression, and aggression

Your caregiver will assess the benefits of using Namenda XR against your risk of adverse effects. Patients are encouraged to report negative side effects or adverse reactions of Namenda XR to the FDA. Visit www.fda.gov/medwatch, or call 1-800-FDA-1088.

Namenda XR drug interactions

Namenda XR can interact with other medications. These include:

  • Use with other NMDA antagonists – amantadine, ketamine, and dextromethorphan has not been evaluated
  • Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors such as acetazolamide, methazolamide, sodium bicarbonate
  • Drugs that use the same renal cationic system, including hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ), triamterene (TA), metformin, cimetidine, ranitidine, quinidine, and nicotine, could result in altered plasma levels of both agents

The AChE inhibitor donepezil HCl did not affect the action of either drug. Memantine did not affect AChE inhibition by donepezil. In patients with moderate to severe Alzheimer’s disease, the adverse reaction profile with a combination of memantine immediate-release and donepezil was the same as that of donepezil alone

This list is not exhaustive and other prescription drugs may interact with Namenda XR.

Namenda XR contraindications

You should not use Namenda XR if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient memantine hydrochloride
  • Are allergic to any other excipients used in the formulation

  • Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Namenda XR
  • Have epilepsy or another seizure disorder
  • Have liver or kidney disease
  • Have problems urinating
  • Have a bladder or kidney infection
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed
