What is Novolin 70/30 ReliOn?

Novolin 70/30 ReliOn is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Novo Nordisk. It is an insulin injection containing 70% intermediate-acting insulin isophane suspension (NPH) and 30% short-acting human insulin, for the treatment of patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes mellitus.

What doses of Novolin 70/30 ReliOn are available?

Novolin 70/30 ReliOn is available in a disposable pen at Walmart. The pen can dial doses up to 60 units in 1 unit steps. Novolin 70/30 is also available in 100 units per mL (U-100) as 10 mL vials, or 3 mL Novolin 70/30 FlexPens.

Inject in the abdominal wall, thigh, upper arm, or buttocks subcutaneously 30 minutes before starting your meal, twice daily. Each dose is intended to cover 2 meals or a meal and a snack. Rotate injection sites to reduce the risk of lipodystrophy.

Novolin 70/30 ReliOn side effects

The most common side effects of Novolin 70/30 ReliOn in clinical trials include:

  • Allergic reactions
  • Injection site reactions
  • Lipodystrophy
  • Weight gain

In rare instances, Novolin 70/30 ReliOn can cause more serious side effects. These can include:

  • Hyperglycemia (high blood sugar levels)
  • Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
  • Hypokalemia (low potassium) – monitor potassium levels
  • Life-threatening hypersensitivity reactions
  • Fluid retention and heart failure when used with thiazolidinediones
  • Ketoacidosis

  • Antidiabetic agents
  • ACE inhibitors
  • Angiotensin II receptor blocking agents
  • Sulfonamide antibiotics
  • Estrogens
  • Glucagon
  • Thyroid hormones
  • Drugs that may reduce the signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia, such as Beta-blockers
