What is Pazeo?

Pazeo is a prescription eye-drop medication used to treat itching caused by eye allergies, medically called allergic conjunctivitis.

If you have an eye allergy that causes itching, your doctor may prescribe Pazeo to you. This prescription medication comes as a liquid that you drop into your eyes using a dropper bottle. Pazeo can reduce itching in around 30 minutes and can give you lasting relief for up to 24 hours. The usual dosage of Pazeo is to put one drop in each affected eye once a day, but always make sure you take it exactly as directed by the doctor who prescribed this medication to you.

Pazeo active ingredients

The active ingredient in Pazeo is called olopatadine. It’s a type of drug called a mast cell stabilizer that can reduce itching. When you drop Pazeo into your eyes, olopatadine molecules attach to cells in your eyes called mast cells. These mast cells produce histamine, an immune system substance that triggers inflammation and itching. The olopatadine molecules bind with areas on the mast cells called histamine receptors, reducing histamine production, lessening inflammation and itching.

Pazeo side effects & Pazeo drug interactions

If you take Pazeo you may experience side effects. The most common side effects caused by Pazeo include:

  • Headaches
  • Blurred vision
  • Dry eyes
  • Abnormal sensations in your eyes
  • An inflammatory eye condition called superficial punctate keratitis that can cause your eyes to feel red, watery, sensitive to light, and can cause some vision changes
  • A sore throat
  • Changes in your sense of taste (dysgeusia)

In rare instances, Pazeo can cause more serious side effects, including allergic reactions to the medication. Your doctor will assess the benefits of taking Pazeo against your risk of side effects.

Pazeo can also interact with other medications. When this happens, it can change how Pazeo and the other medications work and can even make some side effects more likely, or more serious. Tell your prescribing physician about all drugs you’re taking, particularly any other medications or products you put directly into your eyes.

Pazeo warnings & precautions

Take care when putting Pazeo into your eyes and make sure that you don’t touch your eye or eyelids with the dropper tip of the bottle, as this can contaminate your Pazeo and may harm your eye.

Don’t put Pazeo into your eyes while wearing contact lenses as your lenses may absorb the Pazeo. Take your contact lenses out and then wait five minutes after you’ve used Pazeo before you put them back in. Don’t put your contact lenses back in if your eyes are red and itchy.

Pazeo isn’t suitable for everyone. Specifically, it should not be given to children under two years of age. Don’t take Pazeo if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient olopatadine
  • Are allergic to any of the other ingredients in Pazeo (you can find these listed in the leaflet which comes with the medication)

Talk to your doctor before taking Pazeo if you:

  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed
