What is Penlac?

Penlac (ciclopirox topical solution) is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Aventis. Penlac is an antifungal medicine used to prevent fungus from growing on your skin. Penlac nail lacquer is used for the treatment of fungal infections of the toenails (onychomycosis) and fingernails.

What doses of Penlac are available?

Penlac is available as nail lacquer, in the following doses: 80 mg in 1mL.

Use Penlac on the nails and surrounding skin only. Remove loose nails using nail clippers or a nail file. Apply once daily to all affected nails with the applicator provided. Apply the lacquer evenly over the entire nail. Apply the nail lacquer to the underside of the nail and to the skin under it. Allow the lacquer to dry before putting on socks or stockings, and wait 8 hours after applying before taking a bath or shower. Apply Penlac nail lacquer daily over the previous coat. Remove the nail lacquer once a week with alcohol.

You may need to use this treatment for several months before improvement of symptoms is seen. Up to 11 months of daily application, monthly removal of the unattached infected nail, and weekly trimming may be required for complete treatment. Do not use nail polish or other nail cosmetic products on the treated nails.

Store Penlac nail lacquer at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light. Penlac nail lacquer is flammable. Avoid using near open flame, and do not smoke until the lacquer has dried on your skin.
