What is Pennsaid?
Pennsaid is a medication prescribed to adults to relieve pain in your knees caused by osteoarthritis. Pennsaid comes as a topical solution (a liquid) that you apply directly to your knees. You spread the liquid over the front, sides, and backs of your knees, usually twice daily. The Pennsaid is absorbed into your knees and provides pain relief.
Osteoarthritis is a joint disease that makes you lose joint cartilage. If you lose too much cartilage, the bone beneath the cartilage can become damaged as you move your joints. As affected joints become damaged, they can swell, and you can feel a reduced range of motion, stiffness, numbness, and pain. Often symptoms come on slowly as damage occurs gradually. Osteoarthritis can affect most joints but often damages your knees. Often joints on one side of your body can be affected more than on the other side. Osteoarthritis can be treated in a range of ways, including using medications that reduce pain in your joints, like Pennsaid.
Pennsaid active ingredients
The active ingredient in Pennsaid is called diclofenac sodium. It’s a type of medication called a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that reduces pain and inflammation.
Diclofenac sodium works by blocking steps in the processes inside your body that cause inflammation and pain. It reduces inflammation by blocking the production of two substances, called prostaglandin and leukotrienes. These substances are used in steps in the process your immune system triggers to cause inflammation. This halts the process and reduces the amount of inflammation in your knee joints. It limits pain by blocking channels in your nerve cells that bring minerals into the cells (like sodium and potassium). This reduces how sensitive your nerves are to pain and limits the pain signals your nerves send.
