What is Pfizerpen?

Pfizerpen is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Pfizer, Inc. Pfizerpen is used to treat many different types of severe infections, including strep and staph infections, diphtheria, meningitis, gonorrhea, and syphilis.

Pfizerpen is a fast-acting antibiotic that fights bacterial infections in your body. It is also used to prevent infection of the heart (bacterial endocarditis) in patients with certain heart diseases who are having surgery.

Pfizerpen is also used for the treatment of bacteremia, empyema, Streptobacillus moniliformis, and Spirillum minus (rat-bite fever).

What doses of Pfizerpen are available?

Pfizerpen is available in powder for injection form, in the following doses: 5000000[iU].

Pfizerpen is injected by intramuscular or intravenous injection through an IV. Pfizerpen may also be injected into the membrane surrounding the lungs, or into the fluid surrounding the spinal cord.

Pfizerpen side effects

The most common side effects of Pfizerpen in clinical trials include:

  • Mild diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Black or hairy tongue
  • Pain, swelling, bruising, or irritation around the injection site

In rare instances, Pfizerpen can cause more serious adverse effects. These can include:

  • Anaphylaxis – Serious and occasionally fatal hypersensitivity reactions
  • If used to treat syphilis or other spirochetal infections (such as Lyme disease), this medication may cause a condition known as Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction
  • May rarely cause a severe intestinal condition due to a bacteria called C. difficile
  • Hyperkalemia

  • Antibacterial agents – erythromycin, tetracycline
  • Probenecid which blocks the renal tubular secretion of penicillins

Pfizerpen contraindications

You should not use Pfizerpen if you:

  • Have a history of hypersensitivity to the active ingredient penicillin G potassium, penicillin, or cephalosporin antibiotics
  • Have had an allergic reaction to any of the other ingredients in Pfizerpen

Talk to your doctor before using Pfizerpen if you:

  • Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Pfizerpen
  • Have an electrolyte imbalance or are particularly sensitive to sodium intake (e.g newborns, patients with heart failure or hypertension)
