What is Prevacid Solutab?

Prevacid Solutab is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Takeda Pharmaceuticals America, Inc. It is classed as a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) and used for the treatment and prevention of duodenal ulcers and gastric ulcers, gastric ulcers caused by NSAID use, erosive esophagitis (damage to the esophagus from stomach acid), and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Lansoprazole may be used in a triple therapy combination with antibiotics such as amoxicillin, and clarithromycin to treat ulcers associated with H. pylori bacteria. It may also be used to treat Zollinger-Ellison syndrome which involves excess stomach acid, and over-the-counter Prevacid SoluTab (Prevacid OTC) is used to treat heartburn that occurs 2 or more days per week.

What doses of Prevacid Solutab are available?

Prevacid Solutab is available as delayed-release capsules, in the following doses: 15 mg, or 30 mg. It is also available as Prevacid SoluTab delayed-release orally disintegrating tablets in the following doses: 15 mg and 30 mg.

Prevacid Solutab active ingredients

The active ingredient of Prevacid Solutab is lansoprazole.

Prevacid Solutab side effects

The most common side effects of Prevacid Solutab in clinical trials include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Stomach pain
  • Nausea
  • Constipation

In rare instances, Prevacid Solutab can cause more serious side effects. These can include:

  • Increased risk of Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea
  • Bone fracture
  • Hypomagnesemia (low magnesium blood level)
  • Kidney problems (acute tubulointerstitial nephritis) – change in frequency or amount of urine, blood in the urine, pyrexia, joint pain, loss of appetite, skin rash, edema, unusual tiredness or weakness, or unusual weight gain

Prevacid Solutab drug interactions

Prevacid Solutab can interact with other medications. These include:

  • Drugs with pH-dependent absorption – ampicillin, atazanavir, erlotinib, nelfinavir, rilpivirine
  • Warfarin
  • Tacrolimus
  • Theophylline
  • Methotrexate
  • Azole antifungals – itraconazole, ketoconazole, posaconazole
  • St. John’s wort
  • Digoxin
  • Take at least 30 mins before sucralfate
  • You may take antacids at the same time

Prevacid Solutab contraindications

You should not use Prevacid Solutab if you:

  • Have had an allergic reaction to the active ingredient lansoprazole, or omeprazole
  • Are allergic to any of the other ingredients in Prevacid Solutab
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant

Talk to your doctor before using Prevacid Solutab if you:

  • Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Prevacid Solutab
  • Have severe liver disease
  • Have lupus
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed
