What is Prevnar 13?
Prevnar 13 is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals LLC. and marketed by Pfizer Inc. Studies show PCV13 causes the body’s immune system to create antibodies, which help fight the pneumococcal bacteria.
Prevnar 13 is used in children, 6 weeks through 5 years of age for active immunization for the prevention of:
- Invasive pneumococcal disease caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes 1, 3, 4, 5, 6A, 6B, 7F, 9V, 14, 18C, 19A, 19F and 23F
- Otitis media caused by S. pneumoniae serotypes 4, 6B, 9V, 14, 18C, 19F, and 23F. No otitis media efficacy data are available for serotypes 1, 3, 5, 6A, 7F, and 19A
In children 6 years through 17 years of age, Prevnar 13 is indicated for active immunization for the prevention of:
- Invasive disease caused by S. pneumoniae serotypes 1, 3, 4, 5, 6A, 6B, 7F, 9V, 14, 18C, 19A, 19F and 23F
In adults 18 years of age and older, Prevnar 13 is indicated for active immunization for the prevention of:
- Pneumonia and invasive disease caused by S. pneumoniae serotypes 1, 3, 4, 5, 6A, 6B, 7F, 9V, 14, 18C, 19A, 19F and 23F
Prevnar 13 does not protect against disease caused by S. pneumoniae serotypes that are not in the vaccine.
Pneumococcal disease is common in young children, but older adults are at the greatest risk of serious illness and death. In the United States, there are 2 kinds of vaccines that help prevent pneumococcal disease
- Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine or PCV13
- Pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine or PPSV23
The CDC (centers for disease control and prevention) recommends pneumococcal vaccination for all children younger than 2 years old and all adults 65 years or older. In certain situations, older children and other healthy adults should also get pneumococcal vaccines.
What doses of Prevnar 13 are available?
