What is Proventil HFA?

Proventil HFA is a prescription medication given to adults and children over 4 years of age to treat and prevent bronchospasms. Proventil HFA can help treat bronchospasms if you’re having one and can help prevent them if you’re about to exercise. You inhale Proventil HFA directly into your lungs using a Proventil HFA inhaler. The medication then relaxes the muscles in your airways and lungs. This makes it easier to breathe if you’re having a bronchospasm or reduces your chances of having one if you’re about to exercise.

Bronchospasms are a sudden tightening of the muscles in your airways and lungs. This reduces how much air you can take into your lungs and can make it harder for you to breathe. Your chest can feel tight, you can wheeze and cough, feel short of breath, and in severe cases you can lose consciousness or even suffocate.

Bronchospasms are more likely to happen if you have a disease that affects your lungs and airways. These include asthma (where bronchospasms are usually called asthma attacks), or chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD) like chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Bronchospasms can be brought on by exercise, particularly in people with lung and airway conditions (exercise-induced bronchospasm).

Proventil HFA active ingredients

The active ingredient in Proventil HFA is a beta-blocker called salbutamol. It helps to relax the muscles in your airways and lungs that tightened to cause your bronchospasm. When you inhale Proventil HFA, salbutamol molecules attach themselves to the muscle tissue in your lungs and airways. They bind with areas on the surface of the muscle called beta receptors. This causes the receptors to start a chemical process in your muscle tissue that causes it to relax. This helps to open up your lungs and airways.
