What is Relizorb?

Relizorb (immobilized lipase) cartridge is an FDA-approved (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) de novo medical device manufactured by Alcresta Therapeutics, Inc.

Pancreatic insufficiency (PI) and fat malabsorption can lead to reduced caloric intake, the inability to maintain weight, and increased gastrointestinal symptoms. Thus, enteral nutrition is used in patients with cystic fibrosis and poor nutritional status.

If you need help breaking down fats from enteral tube feeding formula, your doctor may prescribe Relizorb. Relizorb is a digestive enzyme cartridge that contains iLipase (digestive enzyme lipase attached to polymeric microbead carriers stored within the Relizorb cartridge). Relizorb connects directly to your feeding tube. As the formula passes through, it makes contact with the iLipase, breaking down the fat in the formula to fatty acids and monoglycerides, before entering your body.

Relizorb has been shown to break down up to 90% of fats in most enteral feeding tube formulas tested, including long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFAs) such as the omega-3 fatty acids docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and arachidonic acid. Relizorb is indicated for use in pediatric patients, 5 years of age and above, and adult patients to hydrolyze fats in enteral formula. It is shown to significantly improve fat absorption.

What doses of Relizorb are available?

Relizorb is available as a single-use cartridge device. It is used for enteral feeding only and should not be connected to intravenous or another medical tubing. Other medications should not be administered through Relizorb.

You should follow your physician’s guidance for pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT) use for meals and snacks, and follow your physicians’ guidance regarding the need for pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT) during enteral feeding.

Relizorb is a single-use product and should not be re-used. Re-use may cause contamination of the product. Always speak with your healthcare provider about any changes so they can monitor and evaluate your condition.
