What is Repatha?

Repatha is an injectable medication that lowers levels of bad (LDL) cholesterol in your blood. Specifically, it’s prescribed to:

• Lower bad cholesterol (LDL) levels in adults and children over 13 years of age who have homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia

Repatha lowers your LDL cholesterol levels by helping your liver to make more LDL cholesterol out of your blood. You take it by injecting it under your skin, using either a single-use prefilled autoinjector, single-use prefilled syringe, or single-use on-body infusor. Repatha is used alongside diet changes and sometimes with other cholesterol-lowering medicines too.

Repatha active ingredients

The active ingredient in Repatha is called evolocumab. It’s a type of protein your body naturally produces called a monoclonal antibody. Evolocumab works by increasing the amount of LDL cholesterol your liver can remove from your blood.

Your liver absorbs cholesterol to lower the levels of LDL in your blood. It takes in cholesterol with the help of sites on its surface called LDL receptors. But a protein found in your body called PCSK9 can block these receptors. Evolocumab helps by attaching to PCSK9. This stops it from blocking the liver’s LDL receptors, allowing your liver to take in more LDL cholesterol.
