What is Silenor?

Silenor is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Somaxon Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Silenor is classed as a miscellaneous anxiolytic, sedative, and hypnotic, tricyclic antidepressant, indicated for the treatment of insomnia characterized by difficulties with sleep maintenance. It is not known how this medication improves sleep but may be due to blocking histamine receptors.

What doses of Silenor are available?

Silenor is available in tablet form, in the following doses: 3 mg and 6 mg tablets.

Take 6 mg as the initial dose, once daily for adults, and 3 mg once daily for the elderly. Take within 30 minutes of bedtime. The total daily dose should not exceed 6 mg. Silenor should not be taken within 3 hours of a meal as it may make you sleepy the next day if taken with or right after a meal.

Silenor contains doxepin as the active ingredient.

Silenor side effects

The most common side effects of Silenor in clinical trials compared to placebo include:

  • Drowsiness or tiredness
  • Somnolence
  • Sedation
  • Nausea
  • Upper respiratory tract infection

In rare instances, Silenor can cause more serious adverse effects. These can include:

  • Abnormal thinking, behavioral changes, complex behaviors, which may include “sleep-driving” and hallucinations
  • Depression – worsening of depression or suicidal thoughts
  • CNS-depressant effects – can impair alertness and motor coordination

Silenor drug interactions

Silenor can interact with other medications. These include:

  • Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAO inhibitors) – Silenor should not be given to patients on MAOIs within the past two weeks
  • Cimetidine
  • Alcohol – increased sedative effects
  • CNS depressants (central nervous system) and sedating antihistamines
  • Tolazamide – a case of severe hypoglycemia has been reported

This list is not exhaustive and other prescription drugs may interact with Silenor. Tell your healthcare provider about all of the medicines you take including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

Silenor contraindications

You should not use Silenor if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient doxepin
  • Have had an allergic reaction to any of the other ingredients in Silenor
  • Have untreated narrow-angle glaucoma
  • Have severe urinary retention

Talk to your doctor about all of your medical conditions, or before using Silenor if you:

  • Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Silenor
  • Have severe sleep apnea
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed
  • Are geriatric – the recommended starting dose is 3 mg
  • Have hepatic impairment or a tendency to urinary retention

Silenor generic

Silenor is the trademark brand name for doxepin manufactured by Somaxon Pharmaceuticals, Inc. A generic version of doxepin is available. Generic drugs are generally cheaper than brand-name drugs, but you can still find Silenor savings through NiceRx.
