What is Tamiflu?

Tamiflu is an FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Roche. Tamiflu is used to treat flu symptoms caused by the flu virus (influenza A and influenza B viruses). Symptoms of flu include fever, chills, aches and pains, cough, stuffy nose, and sore throat. Tamiflu is an influenza neuraminidase inhibitor for the:

  • Treatment of influenza (flu symptoms) in adults and pediatric patients 1 year of age and older who have been symptomatic for no more than 2 days
  • Prophylaxis of influenza in patients 1 year and older

Tamiflu is not a substitute for annual flu vaccination and does not prevent bacterial infections that may happen with the flu. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that pregnant women receive a yearly flu vaccine to prevent influenza.

What doses of Tamiflu are available?

Tamiflu is available in capsule form, in the following doses: 30 mg, 45 mg, 75 mg, and as a powder for oral suspension, in the following doses: 300 mg oseltamivir base (constituted to a concentration of 12 mg/mL).

Tamiflu contraindications

You should not use Tamiflu if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient oseltamivir phosphate
  • Have had an allergic reaction to any of the other ingredients in Tamiflu
  • Have severe kidney disease and are not on dialysis
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant – currently, there is no data for pregnant women

Talk to your doctor about your medical conditions before using Tamiflu if you:

  • Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Tamiflu
  • Have heart problems
  • Have breathing problems
  • Have a weakened immune system
  • Have kidney problems
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed

Tamiflu is the trademark brand name for oseltamivir phosphate manufactured by Roche. A generic version of oseltamivir phosphate is available. Generic drugs are generally cheaper than brand-name drugs, but you can still find Tamiflu savings through NiceRx.
