What is Tazorac?

Tazorac is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Allergan. Tazorac cream 0.05% and 0.1% is used to treat plaque psoriasis topically. Tazorac Cream 0.1% is used for the treatment of acne vulgaris.

What doses of Tazorac are available?

Tazorac is available in cream form, in the following doses: 0.05% and 0.1%.

Apply a thin layer to the affected area only once daily in the evening. If you are using Tazorac to treat acne, wash and dry the affected area(s). Wash your hands after applying. Wash the cream off areas you do not need to treat to prevent skin irritation. Do not apply to areas of skin affected by other skin conditions such as eczema as it may cause severe irritation. Do not get this medication in your eyes or mouth. If you are using a moisturizer cream or lotion, apply it at least an hour before applying this medication.

Tazorac may make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Limit your time in the sun, and avoid tanning beds and sunlamps. Use sunscreen and wear protective clothing when outdoors.

Tazorac active ingredients

Tazorac contains tazarotene, a retinoid, as the active ingredient.

Tazorac side effects

The most common side effects of Tazorac in clinical trials include:

  • Pruritus, erythema, and burning
  • Desquamation
  • Dry skin
  • Contact dermatitis
  • Eczema
  • Worsening of psoriasis
  • Skin pain, rash
  • Hypertriglyceridemia
  • Blisters
  • Dryness and flaking, skin redness, sun sensitivity

In rare instances, Tazorac can cause more serious side effects. These can include:

  • Skin rash or cracking, discoloration or bleeding of the skin
  • Embryo-fetal toxicity – females of child-bearing potential should have a negative pregnancy test within 2 weeks before starting treatment and use a method of contraception during treatment
  • Photosensitivity and risk for sunburn – use with caution if you are also taking drugs known to be photosensitizers

Tazorac drug interactions

Tazorac contraindications

You should not use Tazorac if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient tazarotene
  • Have had an allergic reaction to any of the other ingredients in Tazorac
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant – use effective birth control while you’re using Tazorac

Talk to your doctor before using Tazorac if you:

  • Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Tazorac
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed

Tazorac generic

Tazorac is the trademark brand name for tazarotene manufactured by Allergan. A generic version of tazarotene is available. Generic drugs are generally cheaper than brand-name drugs, but you can still find Tazorac savings through NiceRx.
