 What is Tekturna?

Tekturna contains the prescription medicine aliskiren, a class of medication known as direct renin inhibitors. Tekturna is used for the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure). Tekturna helps to relax blood vessels in the body which allows the blood vessels to widen. The wider blood vessels allow the blood to flow more freely causing your blood pressure to fall. Reducing blood pressure helps to lower the chance of other heart-related problems, particularly strokes.

Treatment with Tekturna should be part of a wider plan that would include a healthy diet with the management of salt and sugar intake, as well as exercise, stopping smoking, reducing alcohol intake, and other drug therapy.

The benefit to patients from a reduction in blood pressure is most beneficial to those patients with the highest blood pressure, even small reductions in blood pressure can have quite a significant impact on the health of these patients. Also, patients with other high-risk factors such as high body fat or diabetes benefit greater from a reduction in their blood pressure.

Tekturna is used for the treatment of people who are 6 years of age or older and weigh at least 50kg.

Tekturna active ingredients

Renin is released from your kidneys and works in the body by converting angiotensinogen to Ang I (angiotensin I). Ang I is then converted to the active version angiotensin II (Ang II). Ang II is what is known as a vasoconstrictor, meaning it narrows the blood vessels in your body. Ang II also causes chemicals to be released in your body called catecholamines. These chemicals also increase your heart rate and blood pressure. The combination of these effects on your body is to increase your blood pressure.

Aliskiren is a direct renin inhibitor, it decreases the action of renin in the body, and Ang I and Ang II levels are also reduced. Aliskiren, therefore, has the effect of reducing your blood pressure (antihypertensive). Aliskiren can be used alone or in combination with other medications.
