What is TobraDex ST?

TobraDex ST is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Eyevance Pharmaceuticals LLC. It is a topical antibiotic and corticosteroid combination for steroid-responsive inflammatory ocular conditions including blepharitis, conjunctivitis, and contact lens acute red eye for which a corticosteroid is indicated and where superficial bacterial ocular infection or a risk of bacterial ocular infection exists.

What doses of TobraDex ST are available?

TobraDex ST is available as an ophthalmic suspension, in the following doses: 3 mg/mL tobramycin and 0.5 mg/mL dexamethasone.

Instill one drop into the conjunctival sac(s) every 4 to 6 hours. During the initial 24 to 48 hours, the dosage may be increased to one drop every 2 hours. The frequency should be decreased gradually depending on improvement in clinical signs, but care should be taken not to discontinue therapy prematurely. Do not use while wearing soft contact lenses. A preservative in this medicine could permanently stain the lenses. Use the medicine at least 15 minutes before inserting your contact lenses.

TobraDex ST contains tobramycin and dexamethasone as the active ingredients.

TobraDex ST side effects

The most common side effects of TobraDex ST in clinical trials include:

  • Hypersensitivity and localized ocular toxicity
  • Eye pain
  • Eyelids pruritus, eyelid edema
  • Conjunctival hyperemia

In rare instances, TobraDex ST can cause more serious adverse effects. These can include:

  • Increase in intraocular pressure (IOP)
  • Glaucoma with damage to the optic nerve, defects in visual acuity, and fields of vision
  • Sensitivity to topically applied aminoglycosides
  • Cataracts
  • Delayed healing
  • Bacterial infections
  • Viral infections
  • Fungal infections

TobraDex ST can interact with other medications. These include:

  • Smallpox vaccine
  • Antivirals – atazanavir, boceprevir, fosamprenavir, ritonavir
  • Antibiotics – clarithromycin, erythromycin
  • Diclofenac ophthalmic, flurbiprofen ophthalmic
  • Azole antifungals – itraconazole, ketoconazole, miconazole

TobraDex ST contraindications

You should not use TobraDex ST if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredients tobramycin and dexamethasone
  • Have had an allergic reaction to any of the other ingredients in TobraDex ST
  • Have viral diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva including epithelial herpes simplex keratitis (dendritic keratitis), vaccinia, and varicella
  • Have mycobacterial infection of the eye
  • Have fungal diseases of ocular structures

Talk to your doctor before using TobraDex ST if you:

  • Are taking any of the medications that could interact with TobraDex ST
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed
