What is Vancocin?

Vancocin is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by ANI Pharmaceuticals. Vancomycin is a glycopeptide antibiotic used to treat colitis caused by Clostridium difficile (C. difficile), and Enterocolitis caused by Staphylococcus aureus. It is also used for the treatment of infective endocarditis (in combination with aminoglycosides) due to susceptible isolates of MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), viridans group streptococci Streptococcus gallolyticus, Enterococcus species, and Corynebacterium species.

Prescribing Vancocin without proof of bacterial infection is not likely to benefit the patient and increases the risk of drug-resistant bacteria developing.

What doses of Vancocin are available?

Vancocin is available in capsule form, in the following doses: 125 mg, and 250 mg.

For C. difficile-associated diarrhea in adult patients, 18 years of age and older take 125 mg orally 4 times daily for 10 days. For pediatric patients under 18 years of age, doses of vancomycin are based on body weight in 3 or 4 divided doses for 7 to 10 days.

The intravenous (IV) form of vancomycin is used to treat serious or life-threatening infections that have not been treated adequately with other antibiotics, or where penicillins cannot be used.

Always speak with a healthcare professional for medical advice about any changes to your dose so they can monitor and evaluate your condition.
